Upgrade my build? Help please

Go to solution Solved by Megazero,

No its not really struggling, i also don't do much video editing/ rendering. For some reason i thought that maybe the gtx 980 wouldn't perform as well with my cpu.

If the i5 will handle it fine then i am most likely going to save that money and upgrade to 2 new monitors. (not sure which ones yet tho).

Your i5 is fine, dont upgrade it. A GTX 980 isnt a very viable choice since you can get 2 970 at only 100$ more and 2 970 will do much much better than 1 980, especially if you plan to go with 3 monitors setup.

Also, think hard about your monitors setups. To me at least the 3 monitors setup is quite distracting and not useful for gaming (except racing game). But if you have 2 monitors the game cant be run on 2 monitors, it can only run on 1 or 3+ monitors since Nvidia and AMD design Surround and Eyefinity that way (it do make sense since you dont want your crosshair lying between 2 monitors). 2 monitors however is very good for multi tasking, such as playing games on 1 and keep a guide/ youtube/ facebook etc on the other.

I have had my build for almost a year now but now seeing all the new stuff that has came out i feel like i need an upgrade.
Currently i have a

Graphics Card:
AMD Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Edition

Processor:

intel i5-4670k @ 3.4 ghz

Motherboard:
Asus Maximus VI Gene

Case:
Corsair 350D

I was thinking of upgrading my gpu and cpu, i want to get the gtx 980 superclocked by evga (when it comes in stock) and the i7-4790k but i am not completely sure that those would fit in with my current build? what do you guys think? Do i also need to upgrade motherboards or do i need a new case? Any help will be appreciated :)

Unless your rendering videos, you dont really need to get a 4790k when you already have a 4670k. You dont need a new motherboard if you keep your 4670k, but if you upgrade to a 4790k, you should get a z97 motherboard. If you really want a 980, go ahead and get one, but the 970 is a better value. Your case is fine.

That is still a good spec. Does it struggle with anything ? The i5 to i7 isn't worth it unless you are doing lots of video editing/rendering etc.

the gpu you have is equivalent to the r9 280x or the gtx 770 so its still a great gpu but if you want to upgrade the gpu than the 980 is well worth it but i would recommend getting the ftw version of the 980 from evga because the cooler is a bit better and it has a higher clock

Your cpu is still the 'current' processor on 1150 along with the refresh i5 4690K. It will handle Crossfire/SLI without issue if you wanted to go down that route.

Yeah i don't want 3, i don't really play racing games. I like 2 just so i can multitask on my second one and just game on my main one.

Go with the new monitor(s) first and see how the 7970 handles your games (At 1080p it should be fine). If it struggles, then you can look at changing the gpu.
