I'm looking at putting together a Ubuntu file server and the only thing i'm having a hard time coming to deciding on is the processor. I thought about getting one of the Haswell Celeron processors. But what do you guys think I should get in terms of be price to performance, keep the price of a Mobo to go with it in mind too.

Ask around family, friends always somebody with old pc in the closet, my current server is an old Athlon x2 640 quad core with 8gb of value ddr3 and a 500b wd blu drive running a ProxmoxVE install (debian with a web gui for managing KVM machines) it runs all sorts from a 512 slot teamspeak3 server, lamp stack, separate kvms for Drupal, Magento all with a fair load barely use any resources when all running i would highly recommend Proxmox you can turn one server into a fairly smooth running cluster of various different operating systems and servers with a simple web interface.
