Are there any good external hard drives out there that don't have some strange hard to use software attached to it? Like just something high in capacity I can plug in via ethernet or usb and window's will pick it up as a portable storage device? Similar to like a flash or thumb drive? I just need something to move files onto so I can swap hard drives when I get a new system. Like, I need to back up family photo's, some work projects and game files that I work on. And just move them to the new drive after I build the system?

Pretty much any external hdd is like that once you format it.

Okay, cause I have a WD My Book Live and that thing is a nightmare to work with. -.- Everything has to be moved over LAN and it takes ages. I don't know why but it refuses to use a wired connection to transfer data. Is there any brand in particular I should look at?

There are plenty of options to choose from. Where are you shopping/located? Budget? What size are you looking for?

Ah, okay.

And I was hoping about 3TB, and anywhere up to like $150. I'd like to stick to amazon if I could, just cause returns and warranties are so simple there.

That looks about like what I need. As long as it's drag and drop file backups, this would be ideal.

That looks fine.

When it comes to all these externals the big difference between all those versions is the software that's bundled with it. The WD My Essential series is basically bare, nothing to load or get in your way. As you go up the chain it gets weird and wonky from simple backup drives to NAS and "cloud" thingies. Read the boxes carefully!

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!
