I want to know what would handle animation/video rendering the CPU or GPU?

Usually both. In programs that support it, the load is distributed to make the best use of both available CPU power and GPU power. However keep in mind not all animation and video editing programs support GPU acceleration, so in some of them it will be CPU only.

 

That's why having more cores doesn't benefit gaming but benefits animation and video rendering, because those tasks can actually utilize all the cores thrown at it.

CPU most of the time, RAM come in second as most important part for rendering videos. GPU comes in when you have to input some sort of 3D graphics in your video like with After Effect.

Depends on the program you're using.

For example, Blender's Internal render Only uses the CPU. But the Cycles render can use both (But not at the same time yet) However, certain features don't work on the GPU and as the CPU can use more RAM, I'd go for a beefier CPU over a beefier GPU.

 

Of course, It depends on how much money you have...

depends on the application, usually they are programmed to use both GPU  & CPU together , some may offload the work solely to the GPU. in WETA studio, i think a cluster of xeon in combination with phi co-processors with quadro does the combined job.of final rendering of filtered 3d animation.

I've been using a lot of 3D softwares (3ds max, maya, cinema4d, blender, solidworks, autocad, microstation, keyshot) and After Effect/Premiere as well, and I can safely say that it's gonna be CPU only 80% of the time. Especially with consumer grade hardware.

 

Only a few rendering engine use openCL/CUDA, and you need a workstation grade card anyway, sometimes you can hack it, like with After Effect/Premiere, but even then, it'll only be used for specific effects/filters.

 

But when you want to setup a workflow, you don't just go "I'll use my GPU or CPU to render", you read a lot about the specific tools you're gonna use, and the certified drivers that go along with them. And then only you pick the hardware that'll suit your needs.

 

For example someone rendering his CAD design work with Keyhsot or Bunkspeed won't get the same hardware as someone who does video editing.
