16gb vs 32gb Nexus 5

Thony

Since i m buying this phone I had a look at how much storage is left to users after OS and google apps.

For 16gb version it is 12.5gb and for 32gb version it is 26.7gb.

16-12.5 = 3.5gb taken by OS

32-26.7 = 5.3gb taken by OS

My question is: Why does 32gb version takes extra. 1.8gb for OS and apps ???

Here is my guess.  As the memory is larger, it obviously would need a higher capacity cache on the memory. That is where the extra stuff went to.

Probably additional cache on the memory.

32gb advertised doesn't always give you the full 32gb.  My 64gb OnePlus One, for instance, has a total storage capacity of 54.87gb instead of 64gb.

All SSDs and HDDs work this way. About 7% of storage space is lost due to the way they are formatted. OSes see 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes. Manufacturers of these drives quote their storage capacities as 1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes. Hence the discrepancy between advertised size and actual size of drives.

Due to 32GB being a higher number to start with, that 7% will represent a larger chunk of memory 'lost' compared to the 16GB drive. 64GB would 'lose' even more storage space than 32GB and so on...
