upgrade path? 290 or 770

The R9 290 will pretty much destroy the 770 every way possible, so I would get that one out of the two choices. Mantle is supported in few games ATM, unless you play BF4 a lot.

Hi Guys,

Im currently running an AMD 6800k it is serving me well so far but i am looking to upgrade.

I would like to stick with the 6800k as my cpu for now (upgrade in the future).

With the falling prices of the 290 and 770 these have come available to my budget

my question is which one should i get? i know there is a "bottleneck" with my current cpu but i will be upgrading to intel within 6 months or so.

Would this bottleneck be reduced by mantle so would this be a better option??

my budget for the GPU is around £230ish

any helpful tips would be great

Thanks

I game at 1080p and would like to play bf4,Tomb raider, bioshock....

I would say 970 but that's about 100 pounds over your budget. I personally would go with the GTX770 but the 290 is a good card if you can cool it.

A non reference R9 290 is the best choice

if i could stretch my budget to the 970 would that be a better option of the three (better performance, higher overclock, newer architecture)??

R9 290 is a much more powerful card compared to the 770. however i'm concerned about cpu bottleneck in cpu-inensive games ( as bf4 )

If i were you i would save your money until you have enough for a 970 , i just got mine from Scan.co.uk (gigabyte GTX970) for £287 , its a power house , blows the 770 and 290 out of the water IMO , i can max BF4 with %150 resolution scale and it stays above 60fps all the time , i would however upgrade your CPU + mobo , to something that isnt going to slow the GPU down :/

My Pc Specs

CPU : AMD FX-8350 @stock w/Noctua NH D-14   Mobo: Asus M5A99FX    Ram : 16gb Corsair XMS3 @1600mhz    GPU : Gigabyte GTX970 Windforce OC 4GB @1429mhz   SSD: Sandisk X110 256gb    Case: Be Quiet Silent Base 800 Windowed  PSU: EVGA 850w g2  Peripherals : Corsair K70 w/Red Switches , Logitech G502 , Samsung SyncMaster S22B300 (1920x1080) , Ttesports Shock one headset , Phone : HTC one A9

Mantle is going to be a big value-add in this case. Such a lightweight CPU paired to an R9 290 actually stands to gain some serious ground with Mantle in BF4.

The 290 will be your best bet, especially if you play bf4 or the upcoming dragon age. It will help your whimpy apu a lot using mantle.

well the 780 Ti is currently available for £299 and destroys both of them, get that

well it will bottleneck the 780 ti and 290, not the 770 so much. IMO there is no reason to go with a cheap APU with a good graphics card, i would at least have an FX 8350 or i5 4690K for a 780 Ti or 290
