Ssd boot drive/usb drive

Go to solution Solved by Bradleywh,

Windows doesn't lock to your specs. You can take a drive around with you. Its what i do when i'm fixing a customers PC. Very usefull and it will save you some time for sure rather than waiting an age to boot up their slow PC. :p

Hey!

I want to get an ssd (840 most likely) but i want to use it as a boot drive for when im overclocking or when im building a new rig and aside from that using it as an external hard drive however i heard that windows is tied to your system specs, but how does linus does it then? He said in his tech bag video that he uses a neutron gtx as a boot drive, how can he do it if windows locks it to your specs? Am i misinformed or can you get around it?

Thank you for your time!

I'm not sure tbh mate. I have done it for the past year without a problem and i have just upgraded my tech ssd to Windows 8 and that doesn't seem to mind either. Windows 7 and Windows 8 definitely work for me though.

I only need it to work for windows 7 so thats great :D thank you

If you buy an OEM version of Windows, then it'll get locked to the hardware. The full retail version has no limitations.

oh ok, what about "less than legal" ones? :P

Can't say, since I haven't tried it (assuming cracked key as well >.>). What I have tried is downloading the ISO, which is freely available, and using my purchased retail key. That works the same way, since it's a full retail product.

Theoretically, the "less than legal" one should also work similar to the retail version. Only way to find out is to try it.

You can't boot Windows off of a USB drive (windows 7 that is) unless you do some serious modifying. He (Linus) was probably not giving enough information. While most configurations will work, he is bound to get a blue screen on MOST configurations. The biggest problem lies with the SATA controller drivers and SATA type, IDE or AHCI. You are better off just doing a hirens USB drive instead.

On most systems you can change this.... I have been doing the same setup as linus with the SSD for almost 1 and a half years now and I have never run into a problem. Even with older systems.

i wouldn't boot from a usb drive though, i'd take it out of the enclosure when i would use it as a boot drive
