SSD in raid

Go to solution Solved by askmax,

The bigger the SSD the faster they are, just buy the one.

Hi,

Im just re installed my pc. And my idea was to instal games on my ssd where i have my windows on to. But my ssd is only 120g.

I just can't decide whats best:

- Buy 1 new ssd with 250g

or

- Buy a same ssd with 120g and put them in raid.

The raid variant is cheaper (and faster?) but its not safe as i read on the internet.
In raid u have a higher chance that the ssd wil crash so wil my windows on it.

So what to do?

Any of u guys or girls know whats best?

Thx!

Yeah i have been googling some more just a minute ago and i read something on thoms hardware.

"One SSD on its own scores again in the contrived tests we put together. The performance differences when we boot up and shut down Windows 8, then fire up different applications, are marginal at best and not noticeable in practice. Single drives actually manage to outperform the striped arrays some of the time, even.

If you're planning an upgrade and want to know whether to buy a couple of 128 GB drives and put them in RAID 0 or just grab a single 256 GB SSD, for example, the answer still seems clear enough to us: just grab the large drive and use one. Using Samsung's 840 Pros as an example, a pair of 128 GB drives will run you $300 on Newegg right now. The 256 GB model sells for $240 (maybe that's why it's out of stock currently). There's also the issue of reliability. If one drive in a RAID 0 configuration fails, the entire array is lost. At least for a primary system drive, one SSD on its own is safer."

Just had my SSD raid 0 setup die on me today actually. so i don't advise it.
I luckily had a spare 512gb ssd to put my backup image onto to continue, backup, backup, backup..

I didn't really ever hit any better performance in my day to day use. comparing raid 0 to just a single SSD.
If I ever do raid with SSD's again, it ain't going to be raid 0, thats for sure.

So my vote goes for

- Buy 1 new ssd with 250g

CORSAIR RIPPER: AMD 3970X - 3080TI & 2080TI - 64GB Ram - 2.5TB NVME SSD's - 35" G-Sync 120hz 1440P
MFB (Mining/Folding/Boinc): AMD 1600 - 3080 & 1080Ti - 16GB Ram - 240GB SSD
Dell OPTIPLEX:  Intel i5 6500 - 8GB Ram - 256GB SSD

PC & CONSOLE GAMER

I use 2 512gb ssds in raid 0 and i haven't notice any performance boost, but the array already crashed once (after a BSOD) I was fine because i had 2 days old image of the array but i don't really trust it now.

Asgard - Local server(Plex, Minecraft, Teamspeak, etc.)

Valhalla - My main rig(i5 4670k@4.4GHz,GTX780 ACX)

Valkyrie - Asus N53SN(Yeah I want to get rid of this and replace it with something more mobile)
