I was wondering if anybody on here knows why it is taking so long for M2 SSD's to fully come out at their true potential. There are the Samsung XP941's and the Plextor M6e's. This is supposed to be the future of SSD's but they are barely available. Thanks.

They're not that much faster than what we have now, if we needed faster drives quickly, SATA express would be popular.

Right now they are barely faster if you look at the Tom's Hardware SSD chart:

The potential is there if they are able to use the available bandwidth from PCIe slots.

It just strikes me as odd that they are selling motherboards that support them but there is hardly any selection at all.

It was the same story with msata; motherboards were built supporting them but nothing ever happened because all these SSDs are meant for is thin laptops or tablets. There is no need for them on the desktop tbh.

Compatible with Windows 95

Right now as it stands, I would have to agree with you. I am not seeing much of a point. I just thought that maybe someone knows why manufacturing seems to be hitting a brick wall as far as speed. Why are they not able to use more of the available bandwidth? Motherboard vendors are using them as a marketing strategy but are faster M2 or SATAe ever coming? Samsung seems to be pushing their 850 series more than anything else.

Waiting for NVMe controllers? Aren't most still using AHCI? If that's the case, I wouldn't want to waste development on something not much better than current SATA SSDs either.

Please explain. What is the significance of the NVMe controller?

Well thank you for the hint, I had never even heard of this controller. Now I am finding info that suggests that they ARE coming...
