Hello,

I was wondering if any of you have any suggestion for a good remote desktop program. I know Windows has one, but I just wanted to see if there are any others to check out.

What I plan on doing is have my Surface Pro 3 as the computer at work and I want to be able to access all of my programs and files on my home PC. I am a web designer/developer, and the programs that I will be using are the Adobe Creative Cloud products, i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver...etc.

I thought I could maybe use my rig at home to do all of the work and stream it to my Surface Pro 3 while at work. I figure I would be able to save some space, as well as having not having the SP3 work so hard.

Thank you in advance for  any and all help, advice and suggestions.

Johnny

TBH I don't use remote desktop software but as far as I know, Windows Remote Desktop Connection is one of the better examples of remote desktop software. Plus it is already installed on your machine (well it is on full desktop OS anyway).

Teamviewer or windows remote desktop for free, or splashtop for teh monnays. I personally use splashtop and it is great. So low layency compared to teamviewer.

If you only want to view the computer, GoToMeeting is decent, but if you want to control it then "Remote Desktop" built into Windows 7/8 Pro using RDP is the best.  Wyse Pocket Cloud (by Dell) is the best I've found on Android and iOS and the Metro UI; unfortunately its not available on Windows Phone.

I'll also second (or third) Teamvewier. It's incredibly easy to use, and fairly reliable. Furthermore I've never had issues with firewall or port forwarding. Windows built-in RDP is great, but you'll need to configure some port forwarding in your Router most likely, and enable all the necessary security permissions inside Windows.

I would suggest Windows RDP combined with a VPN. I use this same combo everyday for support and to remote in to work systems. I use teamviewer occasionally but the latency is atrocious and imo would make work very difficult and down right frustrating.

AnyDesk given your surface runs a standard version of Windows.

That is interesting, I may have to try that.

this is how I would approach this. Pick your flavour; throw dd-wrt, open-wrt, or tomato on your home router and you're all set.

I use Remote Desktop. It is by far the best. It's performance in Windows 8 and up is a big win.

It's so powerful, you can technically play GAMES over the internet via Remote Desktop.

And that was with my Surface Pro 2, which has Wireless N, not AC like your Pro 3. And I have a standard home internet connection (1 Mbps Upload).

Plus, the connection with Remote Desktop is fairly secure. I am not saying it is secured, like no one can penetrate it, but that there is some level of security being applied, and not open.

RemoteFX is pretty good, I would like to see how it stacks up against AnyDesk tho that offers a steady 60 FPS (in a local network) against the competitors.
