Mic problems

Every mic I have tried i have had problems with static and distortion, could it be caused by my motherboards on board audio?  Or do i just have bad luck with mics.

I have used a Zalman mic 1 and the ATR4650.  Neither have worked. My board is a x79-ud3.

Where do you attach the zalman to yourself at?  If it's distorting, it's probably clipping.  Clip it farther from your mouth, or reduce the levels in the windows sound control panel.

i clip it on my shirt so not close to my mouth at all.

If you go into your mics recording properties and check the "listen to this device" checkbox you can practice talking to it and see if holding it farther away sounds any better.  Dropping the levels a bit might help too.

I tried doing both of those on both the rear and front microphone ports to no avail.  they both still sound like mostly static.
