Where do you attach the zalman to yourself at?  If it's distorting, it's probably clipping.  Clip it farther from your mouth, or reduce the levels in the windows sound control panel.

If you go into your mics recording properties and check the "listen to this device" checkbox you can practice talking to it and see if holding it farther away sounds any better.  Dropping the levels a bit might help too.
