E-Sata

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

I know but my question is why did they go with a connector that isnt compatible with a cable that does the same thing

It's called eSATAp, those eSATA ports that can also be used as USB ports, they carry both SATA data and power. However this never really took off because USB 3 came out, eSATAp was just left as a compatibility measure so that eSATA could still be supported without losing a USB port, mostly on laptops

E-Sata (External SATA) is SATA for external drives. It didn't take off because it doesn't run power through the connector, which is really inconvenient for external drives when you need a separate power brick.

then why not just use a regular sata connection instead of this special one

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I havent seen any that use it

like what @Interfectorem said it doesnt give power to it. And if im not mistaking usb 3.0 is another reason why its not popular.

SATA doesn't carry any power either. That's why there's a SATA power connector to go alongside the SATA connector.

Beats me. Maybe it's some sort of compatibility issue with SATA Controller or what not? I honesty don't know.

Well it's both, just depends on whether a USB or eSATAp device is plugged into the port. eSATA is pretty much dead though now that USB 3.0 exists, now SATA Express is all the rage.

I have an external 500GB Seagate E-SATA drive with a pci card and adapter plugs. I don't use the E-SATA connection and use the USB 2.0 ports. It was faster, it was like a standard SATA drive speed connected to the motherboard. I still use the drive to backup files. I saw the old E-SATA PCI card in a box in my garage the other day.
