After tax returns come back, I'm going to update my laptop with a desktop. After 5 years my laptop is starting to feel its age, and I want something that I can upgrade without replacing the entire computer. (also I'm not mobile anymore like I was 5 years ago)

Wishlist - http://amzn.com/w/9E7KII6M95K7

(Price is a bit of an issue, I'm just a normal gamer looking to future proof)

Breakdown -

CPU: AMD FX-9370

GPU: EVGA GTX 770, 4GB (superclocked ACX) (2-way SLI in the future)

Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z

PSU: EVGA Supernova 850 Gold

RAM: G.Skill, 2x4GB 2400MHz

Problems -

Case 1: Azza Hurrican 2000

Case 2: Cooler Master HAF-X

I like the Hurrican for its 8 fan option, but I read the fans were subpar, so I was thinking replacing them with Noctua fans. I'm fine with that. But... is it really necessary? Would the HAF-X work just as well, etc etc...

-----

CPU Cooling 1: Noctua NH-D15

CPU Cooling 2: Corsair H100i

The NH-D15 sounds like a serious beast, but it's very large. It just seems like it may cause extra heat inside the casing, as well as just be in the way of everything.

I would think the H100i would offer better cooling, but I can't find anything about fitting it into the Hurrican. I can find the H100 fitting into the HAF-X using special screws.

-----

RAID 0: Recommend an SSD.

I don't need more than 250GB combined, it's just for the OS.

It sounds like the mobo has issues with certain SSD and RAID 0

-----

Monitor 1: ASUS VS229H (1920x1080)

Monitor 2: ASUS VS248H (1920x1080)

Does it actually matter for 22 inch vs 24 inch if the resolution is the same?

-----

What case should I do for optimal airflow?

What cooling unit should I go for, for optimal cooling?

What SSD will work in RAID 0 with this mobo?

22 vs 24 inch same resolution...

Any ultimate recommendations?

Whats your budget?

Where are you from?

You will be better off with 4790k. And you dont need so much cooling, just few quiet fans. You dont want loud system.

You are spending alot on wrong places. If you want more cpu power, get X99 and 5820k

I'm trying to keep it under $1500 (including monitors, so the PC itself, probably close to $1000)

U.S. : California, if it really matters.

There isn't much gain in switching to Intel, I would rather spend the extra $100 on getting a strong graphics card.

The CPU I chose is due its value. It performs well, it's fairly inexpensive, and the 8 cores will work well with the multitasking that I'm often performing.

Could you elaborate on "spending on the wrong places"? Are we talking about only cooling or something else?

Not sure if I'm supposed to remind you now or later >.>

Sleep well ^ ^

and... I chose the crosshair after reading about the 9390 overloading channels on some boards. Being that the 9370 isn't far behind it, I upgraded to the crosshair motherboard.

I did a bit more reading. They say 24 inch is good for movie watching and 22 inch is good for gaming.

Movie because of aspect ratio.

Gaming because the GPU doesn't have to do as much (supposedly, even though it's the same resolution)

Since I'm already planning on getting a dedicated gaming monitor, I think the 24 inch would be the best option, since it would be for movies anyway.

get an i5 4690K and a good board like an Asus ranger or sabretooth or MSI Gaming 5 or 7 because the i5 should a couple of years, the RAM is overkill 2133MHz is more than enough, how much is the 770, you maybe able to pick up a 290 which will give better performance unless you want Nvidia's extra features, for a SSD get a Crucial MX 100 or Samsung 840 Evo, out of those cases the HAF-X would be your best bet, though a better case like a Corsair Air 540 would be worth a look and is compatible with the H100i

Intel Core i5 4690K @ 4.2Ghz | Evga GTX 780 Ti SC ACX with backplate | MSI Gaming 9 AC | 8GB (2x4) Corsair Vengeance Pro Silver 2400 MHz | Corsair H105 128GB Crucial MX100 | Toshiba 2TB | Evga 750G2 | Corsair Obsidian 750d | Be Quiet Silent Wings 2 PWM (3x140mm & 3x120mm)

In the beginning I was going back and forth over processors. Is there a decent reason to go with Intel?

From what I can tell, you get marginal performance gains for an obvious price increase.

If I were to go with Intel, I would also aim at an i7. I'm looking to not change much for the next 5+ years. So higher-end while still a good value is what my ultimate goal is.

The 770 is roughly $300. Being that I'm not going to make this computer for another few months, the price will go down. Also, I'm an nVidia fanboy, so I won't be switching to team red (Long engaged argument with a mate of mine who is all about ATI)

I'll have to look into those SSDs.

The Air 540 seems nice, but looking into it... 20 inches across? That would be difficult to position with my desk. The CPU section of my desk is a little over a foot across and a little over 2 feet tall. The HAF-X should fit nicely.

Fair enough, i'm not very knowledgeable about amd processors, but an i7 should have a few years in it
