so my question is what would the average overclock for the 970 to make it need 200w+ if its even possible

most seem to sit comfy between 1400-1500 mine when near 1600 would pull about 250W

meh they don't die if you do it carefully.

 

Only ones who died on me was poor build quality of a Powercolor card (VRAM fried while never been above 75C....), Inno3D one had a rattling fan and the same for a Sapphire tri-x R9 290.

It's hard to break a card with GPU 2.0 or AMD's Powertune, as they use dynamic clock speeds and throttling to keep users from hurting their cards.Overclocking nowadays is much safer than it used to be.

So as an example, when would a throttle kick in? - I'm a noob in OC <_<

As the cards reaches it max temperature threshold. Not sure what it is on a GTX 970, i'll have to look it up.

I kinda dislike this auto clock thingy, though the newer versions are fine, but the stuff they had on the titan was a pain and I couldn't flash the bios soon enough to get rid of it and just make it run 1.2Ghz flat.

 

However they are getting better with this auto tuning stuff so actually growing to like it.
