So my computer is acting up lately. Main symptom is during power up, it comes on for less than a second and dies. It doesnt even reach post. It refuses to be started again unless I switch off the PSU and wait a few seconds.

Be aware that this is a 775 system so Its pretty old. Specs:

Asus P5KPL-AM EPU

Intel Core 2 Duo e7500 @ stock

Generic 2GB DDR2 800MHz stick (dynet brand i think)

Samsung IDE hard drive

Sapphire HD 4670

Thermaltake TR2 600W

I've tried everything I can. I've cleared the cmso and reseated the ram but no luck.

I've disconnected everything from the PSU and jumpered it to power it on. It seems to be fine. It stays on no problem and the voltages are okay.

I also tried to isolate the problem one by one and came to the conclusion that the problem occurs only if the 4 pin cpu power is connected. If I remove it, the system powers on but of course it wont post.

I checked the 4 pin connector and its fine. The voltage is also okay.

I then tried to reseat the CPU but the damn thing still won't power up.

So it seems to be clear that the CPU is the problem however, there are instances where the system will power up sometimes without problems.

Unfortunately, I dont have other cpus I can use.

Any ideas?

Save up, and buy a 4790K.

You can try to find a CPU that'll fit your socket, but I think you should just look into building a new PC.

Well, my Samsung slim desktop after 10 years still works... (Lastly tested 3 months ago)

Well than does it beep?

Did you check the RAM?

Did you check the memory controller? (MOBO)

Do you even have friends with old hardware as you?? so you can switch stuff out and see if it works or not.. But I think its CPU or Motherboard. At least I had the same problem but I was unlucky. both motherboard and CPU was gone but I got all my money back on warranty <3

No post obviously means no beep. I've reseated the ram too.

BUT it now works. Its very odd. There are times when it just doesn't want to turn on.

I've ran MemTest and the ram is ok. Very weird

When the 4 pin cpu connector is plugged in, the system powers on for half a second then dies. When the 4 pin is disconnected, the system will run (but wont boot obviously.

What the fuck?

Either your CPU itself is dead, which based on the info you have provided above that it will not power on when the 4pin is plugged in, or the board is bad. Either way, you will need to upgrade as the technology is old and you probably will have a hard time finding replacements.

with the AM1 socket being so cheap, I'd suggest you just go with that to tide you over till December...

Seriously it seems like a part has died, and with the parts being so old, there's no warranty and you might as well update them
