[US Newegg] Shell shocker! Xeon 12GB workstation!

vt3c

This is a niiiiiice system! This CPU is faster than most sandy bridge processors. Though the GPU is utter crap from the good ol' AMD Athlon days, slap a good radeon 7950 in there and you have a 12GB RAM system with 12 threads that will play anything you want at 1080p for under $1k!!

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.

Having six cores is irrelevant when the games you play only use two and with a frequency that low the performance won't be as good as you think on that older architecture, you can do a lot better with $500.

That cpu will bottleneck in a cpu intensive game if it is not very well optimized for mufti threading. lower IPC than sandy bridge and a lower clock rate.

Turbo frequency is at 3.06 and with little OC and a good GPU it should be a good gaming/workstation PC.

Maybe upgrade the 80gb drive to something more modern like a few 4tb drives. Proxmox may be fun to try with that many threads...

Just no.

Just cause you don't need it, doesn't mean it is useless.
