Ok I am about to make a cross country trip by myself from Arkansas to Oregon and from Oregon to LA, California which is my final place I will be moving to. What is some must know things I need to know to make it safely and without breaking the bank. I am trying to spend less then 500$ if I can help it.

Stay away from florida and texas :D

And texas because it feels like you are driving on circles, it looks the same and its such a huge state it takes forever to go through

Eat cheap. Gas might end up more expensive now that it's vacation season. Keep water and rations in the car as well as a charged cellphone that's old (so the battery lasts a long time). The cell phone is for emergencies as if your main cell dies and for some reason you cant charge it you can use the old cell to make a call to 911. All cell phones whether or not they are on a contract can connect to call 911

i would make sure your car has a total service before you go, maybe even looking at some new tyres since the weather has been abit crazy over there

also 400 isnt enough for fuel if you ask me

get a USB charger for your cigarette lighter plug so you can keep your phone charged

Its all about those volumetric clouds

Check that your lights are working, check the tire pressure and the dipstick, make sure you have either a real spare wheel (and tools) or a "canned spare wheel". It's nice to have a high visibility vest in case you have to stop by the road. For on the road snacks, I would go with water and unsalted nuts (easy on the water so you don't have to stop so often, and unsalted nuts so you don't need so much water). I would also recommend a good audio book for entertainment.

yep I was going to say tires first as well. under inflated tires will cost you extra gas. also air filter and spark plugs if you have the ability.

on top of audio books I was going to say comedy routines. I've listened/watched eddie murphy's delirious since a kid and it is still one of the first ones I play on long trips.

I have entertainment down. Brand new tire replaced my bad one. I have phone charger down and extra phone taken care of. I will be picking up road flares when I pick up snacks. My left blinker works when it wants to but my brakes work awesome and my AC is working amazing. I have a portable airbomb with sealant just in case as well. Thank for the awesome tips so far.

Also, get a good pair of shades and act cool :-P no, seriously, you're not in a hurry! The last time I drove any meaningful distance I got done for speeding so bad that I could have gotten a 780 sli setup for the price of the fine :-(

Thank you everyone who answered to this topic. I made it to California safe. Between food expenses and gas and treats. I spend about 500+ which I did go from Arkansas to Oregon then south to LA. I got an apartment.
