Strange networking issues

Go to solution Solved by Morg141,

Really sorry you're still having problems. At this point, since it seems like you've covered every troubleshooting step imaginable, I would consider purchasing another network controller something like this or a PCI equivalent. That will "resolve" all issues and save more headache attempting to troubleshoot your onboard Ethernet. It's possible it's actually a hardware fault. Not likely, but consider it a definite possibility at this point.

I know that's not exactly the answer you're looking for, but it's all I can provide. Good luck, hopefully it starts working randomly ha.

Well. I honestly do not know what I did or what happened, I'm stumped. But I noticed things loading quicker this morning, so I did a speedtest, and sure enough:

post-47140-0-27270700-1413299385.png

This is over powerline too, and I've now got the highest speeds in the house.. Not that I'm complaining at all!

Thank you all so much for your troubleshooting ideas and time, I really appreciate it!

Let's just hope this isn't some fluke and it stays this stable...

maybe your mobo ethernet is faulty? if you have a ethernet card handy maybe put that in and try it? otherwise get a wifi usb dongle and give that ago too. can't see you having the same problem with a extra ethernet card or a wifi usb dongle unless it's some sort of software conflict

I tried using a spare USB dongle that was laying around, and so far I can't say I've noticed a huge amount of difference. I'll keep using it for the next day and see if I notice anything, but so far, nothing.

Here are my speedtest results with the dongle:

And my results using my old latop which was right next to me, also on wireless:

Are you torrenting something? I don't know that specific router and provider, but some routers firmware can't handle p2p traffic.

Have you ruled out the firewall? (or port forwarding)

This is with regular direct downloads, no torrents. I've tried disabling firewalls and port forwarding shouldn't be an issue with direct downloads.

Did you scan your data for viruses?

I've done a full virus scan with both AVG Free and MalwareBytes - Nothing at all.

its the power line or your Cables most definitely

power line adapters are massively prone to packet loss and odd ping rates and even causing bad Bandwidth,

what type of cable are you using between power line + router and Power line - pc

Is it Cat 5, 5e, 6, 7

if its Cat 6 do you have any odd bends in your cables or extreme kinks,

good quality network cable is copper core but this does make it easy to brake / snap

a 100meter Cat5e Cable would be capable of speeds of 1Gbs where as the best powerline only do 100-200mb, even Wirelss N does 540mb

I will stave off the point about the bt home hub being an absolute piece of ******************

if there are any high drain appliances on the same power line like i dunno a 1000w pc Power supply this can also cause lag

your speedtests above just suggest you left you network cable plugged in during this test! as this network existed b4 the wireless netowrk would use LCR to define a route and choose the powerline and not show you any benefit

I used to use powerline before I upgraded my PC and I used to hit speeds of consistent 18mb/s with no drops, even if say, a hoover was being used. It's also worth mentioning that I've tried using a direct line to the router avoiding the powerline, and with a different cable.

It is a CAT 5 cable, and there are no odd twists or bends. The cable was both removed from my computer, the adapter and the router when the speedtest above were performed.

on a cmd line

do a route print, and see if you have any odd entrys

should only have thinkgs like 0.0.0.0  192.168.0.1

and lots for some for 127.0.0.1 and then ones going the other way your ip to the localhost

you shouldn't have any persistent routes

then id suggest changing your DNS to something like Google 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

see if it improves,

Just asking did you buy a new PSU when you bought your new pc? as like i alighted to, a more power hungry rig could be causing the issue! also don't know if you have access to one? but a pci network card would see if it is just some silly network smoothing on the board

Here are the results of the route print:

Switching to the google DNS also did not yield any better results.

I did upgrade my PSU with the rest of the system to an 850W power supply (my system specs are in my signature and on my profile)

wait hang on you weren't testing the PC and Laptop speeds at the same time with the wifi were you?

Nono, these were done one after the other.

Hi guys!

So I've been having this issue for a while now, pretty much the same time I upgraded my PC.

My Upload speeds are fine at ~0.9mb/s which is good for our area (1mb/s max on our line), however, my download speeds are doing terrible. The speeds are inconsistent and much slower than I should be getting. I'm expecting ~18mb/s (21mb/s max on our line, was getting ~17.5mb/s previously) but am currently getting an absolute max of ~7mb/s, and that's with the speeds peaking. This is making it impossible to watch YouTube videos in more than 480p. It also seems to have this weird issue where it almost seems to get bored of a task and would stop buffering/loading it until I refresh the page. It is also worth noting that no other computer on the network is having this issue, both wired and wireless - They are currently managing to get about 17mb/s with no peaks.

I'm connecting using Ethernet going directly into my router. I've already tried reinstalling my mobo's internet drivers (I believe. The drivers seems a bit of a mess on the ASUS website). The mobo is an ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

ok i not going to lie i did not read everything in this thread but it looks like you have not tried blaming Bt yet.

Can you go into the home hub3 and find the connection link speed.  its in there somewhere.  This is the speed at which the adsl modem is connected to the telephone exchange at and is basically the upper speed bound - looses that you can ever get.

so i can get an idea of the speed text vs the speed bt is giving you.  if there similar it not you computers problem

I've already tried contacting BT and they can detect no issues on our line. Other devices on our network are connecting fine and all getting a stable ~15mb/s download. The connection speed to the router is 100mbps full duplex, and below is a speedtest result from BT Wholesale, on which, it states the maximum speed my line should be able to support:

post-47140-0-94554300-1412941373.png

But the issue isn't speed necessarily - It's more of a case that it seems to get bored of downloads, so they constantly need refreshing to get them to work.

ok. so assuming you running direct Ethernet.

and other things on your network are working its not BT.

then it has to be you driver or is you firewall/antivirus getting in the way.

I would first confirm that the advanced network card setting shows the 100mb/s full duplex and is not in non duplex10mb/s and its shown the same in the homehub.

turn of you firewall/AV and see if it improves

uninstall the device in the device manger and reinstall the driver,  if the driver roll back option is available roll back the driver.

if all else fails get a usb to Ethernet adapter and a new cable.

if this is a power line some devices  cause interface.

ive told him to do that. And it has to be a fault with BT Since you can tell his download is irregular.  while download it is like    20mb/s 5mb/s 20mb/s 5mb/s constantly untill the download completes or fails.  While his Upload has no problem.

Only other reason i can think of is his HDD not being able to write fast enough as he is downloading... so the download stops..

Yes, other devices on the network all get a consistent 15mb/s with no fluctuations, it's just my PC. I've tried using a wireless dongle and that also yielded no results. I've also tried disabling my firewall and AV, but again, there was no changes, and going into the ethernet driver, I can confirm it is running at 100mbps full duplex, the hub confirms this. I've also tried reinstalling the driver from both the original CD and online, again, no results. I can also confirm it isn't the powerline connection, as I still have the issue over wireless, and if I plug my cable directly into the hub.

I still think its the power line thing here, at a stretch its something like TCP chimney or frack weird MTU

Again, I'm still having the same issue if I either directly connect it to the hub, or go wireless with a dongle.

BT have already tested my line several times, and sent engineers out to my house. If it was a fault with BT, surely the over devices in the house would be effected, and not just mine? The HHD should be fine, as it's the same HHD I used before I upgraded my computer and I managed good speeds on that before.

Unplug all devices connected directly the the BT hub and plug your ethernet cable into number 1. Go to http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and test the connection.

Not much else can be thought off. Could be the duplex timing, maybe your PC has a wrong timing to the router making conflicts when downloading. - Log onto the router and find your PC and delete it from the routers list so it has to 'Find' it again. You could try puting your PC into DMZ mode on the router.

When i get home i can look the BT Router settings and see if anything else i can find that may help you.

Thanks for your reply.

Unplugging all other devices and placing mine in slot one gave no better results.

Here is the full BT Wholesale speedtest that you asked for:

post-47140-0-26211200-1413015160_thumb.p

I tried deleting my device and then reconnected it, again, no results. I also went as far to reset the hub to its defaults to make sure it was no silly setting lurking anywhere, again, nothing.

DMZ mode also provided no better results.

Well. I honestly do not know what I did or what happened, I'm stumped. But I noticed things loading quicker this morning, so I did a speedtest, and sure enough:
