So my brother has been talking about doing a complete redo of his PC (it has been down for years!) and he will probably buy the stuff cyber monday. On my free time I have been working on the plans for him (again his PC has been out of service for years, and he has fallen out of practice).

He has a few things from his old PC he can use (blu-ray drive, HDD)

here is what I have made up currently http://pcpartpicker.com/user/jakenator96/saved/pdxxFT

PS

remember when RAM was one of the cheapest things in your build!

MoBo: 970A-D3P CPU: FX-8350 GPU: HD 7950 PSU: 1000watt RAM:8Gb of G,skill 1600

Seem good to me. 64GB SSD maybe cutting it really close so try to get a 120GB if possible.

looks good, but I'd try to cramp a 120GB SSD in there, you can get one for only 10 bucks more...

cool I didn't spot that one, and that is why I did this!

I would spend a little bit more and go for this. This is so much stronger.

he will play anything from jRPGs to RTS to FPS

Then I recommend the build I just posted for much better framerates.

I gave the i3 a thinking over, but it will lag behind in everyday use, and multicore gaming, and on the core 1000, it can't handle larger GPUs while the N200 (a case I built in before) can handle very long GPUs

The I3 beats the Athlon 860K in everyday use and multicore gaming.

the i3 I have seen beat the athlon in video rendering and single core performance, but the moment you through in 4 cores the 860k eats the i3's lunch from what I have seen in the benchmarks

here just to show you what I mean

(older version without the new architecture, but still a good expample)

However that shows situations with less power graphics cards where the CPU can still handle it. R9 280 is a pretty beefy card and the Athlon might not be able to handle it

later in the video he tests it with a GTX 780

I know, and the I5 clearly pulled ahead there. The I3 is not a lot more expensive but that amount of frames is worth it, also if you get Z97 for the I3 you can later expand into broadwell

when you are in this budget every dollar counts, and the new steam rollers are about 10% faster then the piledrivers, so I still stand by athlon x4 860k, plus the FM2+ I am pretty sure that it is going to have a long life span.
