Depends on your other components and budget. If you're not doing an all out build, go for an AIO.

If it's your first PC then go with a AIO.

I don't think this is the right way to think about it. My first PC is the one I have now, with a custom loop.

Personally, I would get a couple of 980's and ditch the water cooling until next year.

I'm fairly confident in saying you're in a minority. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that your first build is watercooled, but most first-time builders aren't really up to the task. With custom watercooling you aren't getting much of a return on your investment compared to AIO's. Custom watercooling is generally something enthusiasts do just because it's awesome.
