Building my first PC

Go to solution Solved by iTzPrime,

Btw: will I need additional cables for the power supply? (to connect the GPU ASUS GTX 970 Strix)

nope the cable are all included ;)

Hey guys, I'm new her and I've already asked a couple of questions here but well I'm building my FIRST PC and I've

choosen the parts and kept it in my budget (MAX 1130€).. I decided I will buy my parts at e-tec.at except for the HDD which

I will buy at a local shop.

Things to consider:

I have a very hot room at home so I have to keep cooling at max (I'll get more fans in a week of the initial build)

My parts: (I've rounded the price a little bit so it is easier)

CASE: Cooler Master CM 690 III - - - - 89€

MOBO: Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer - - - - 123€

CPU: Intel i5-4690k - - - - 218€

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 (Because of the need for great cooling) - - - - 78€

GPU: EVGA 970 SC ACX (Need some help here, see below) - - - - 376€

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) - - - - 82€

PSU: Corsair CS 650M ATX 2.3 - - - - 86€

HDD: WD Caviar Black 1TB  - - -72€

CASE: I love the case of Cooler master because of the possibilities it offers, additional fans, room etc.. also it looks great and that's why I want to keep it for

the build.

MOBO: Not sure if I should get this one or a similar one for the same or less amount of money.. What do you guys suggest?

CPU: No brainer, I think.. I'll use it for gaming and photoshop etc.

CPU Cooler: As mentioned above I need great cooling and the H100i is too expensive.

GPU: Here lies my biggest problem.. I wanted to go with a 770, but the 970 is basically just ~55€ more, so I'd rather get a 970..
I've heard about the coil whine, temperature etc problems of the EVGA so I'm not sure which of the brands to get..
Should I rather get the ASUS Strix or MSI gaming?.. What are the programs that come with it (fan control, overclocking etc..)
I'm not a fan of parts running hot (shorter life span - if I'm not mistaken)

RAM: Any suggestions here, I've heard only good things about corsair vengeance, Xsm has a similar price..

PSU: Open for suggestions, but I think it is a great one..

HDD: Because I'm without a SSD I choose the caviar black.. Also open for suggestions here though =)

Thank you for your help!

Personally, I would get the MSI Gaming 970, just because I like MSI products and the design of their Twin Frozr cards. I haven't looked much into the problems you mentioned about the EVGA 970, but I personally would definitely get the MSI card. The Strix card is good too, and it's about the same price as the MSI, if you like Asus. Also, the Strix has that feature where the fans will be completely off up to a certain load.  So if you're just playing LoL or something like that, the card will be completely silent.

it should be around 1050€ ;)

Case is always personal preference, but that is the way i would build the pc ;)

Thank you for the input.. What are some of the software MSI offers for OCing, control etc.. How do they compare to the other brands (if you know that of course, hehe)

I'll mainly play WoW (don't judge :D) but also games like Crysis 3 (and the older ones), Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, Minecraft, Alien Isolation and some other genres =)

Well personally i think MSI Afterburner is one of the best overclocking softwares atm ;)

From Linus's review, I'd go with the 970 Strix from Asus. For RAM, I usually go with Corsair or G. Skill.

MSI has Afterburner, which is a pretty easy software to use for overclocking and GPU monitoring. It also has recording software built into it, if you're into that.  While I personally don't overclock, OCing with Afterburner is simple, you just use the sliders they have and adjust to the desired clock speed. Along with the core clock slider, there's also sliders for core voltage, power limit, memory clock, and fan speed.

Thank you for this.. I'm looking at the build, the only things that I'm not really fond of is the Case and the power supply..

It is 1.053€ without the SSD and without ram (which I also couldn't find in the shop) (Which I didn't even find in the shop)..

I didn't hear good things bout gigabyte mobos..

Your build is quite more expensive than mine, so I rather stay with my build and exchange the graphics for the ASUS Strix..

But I'm really interested in the CPU Cooler you suggested! =)

I'd love the Samsung SSD, but I've decided against an SSD cause I'd only use it for Windows therefor I'm getting the Caviar Black instead..

Rather spent the money I save on the SSD on the other parts =)

Looks good, however i would buy the seagate for 50€ and a cheap ssd - the speed difference is just to high ;)

Have you checked the failure rate for the seagates? :S

Btw: the Dark Rock Pro 3 looks so much better than th Noctua, but I'm not sure about the installation thingy, I'm

just watching videos about it.. I'll see.. It's just 3€ cheaper than the noctua.. but so much sexier :3

This is a better power supply. It is fully modular and made by Seasonic.

http://www.e-tec.at/frame1/details.php?art=172619

It's also more expensive and has less wattage, which I don't like so much because I want to have additional fans in it and some other things in the near

future.

Thank you for the tip though =)

yeah, also you need more wattage when you overclock your CPU, so a 650 w should be the sweet spot in terms of price/Power

For a single GTX970 and an i5 4690K a 550W psu is plenty. There is a video on Youtube of an i5 4670K and a GTX780ti running off a Corsair RM 450W. That is with the cpu overclocked.

But you do realize, that I'm for the Corsair, cause it is a good brand and it is cheaper.. Also I rather leave some headroom for future upgrades etc ;)
