So a friend of mine asked me to do a build for him. He has 1000 euros to spend but he'd rather not spend all of it. Basically all he wants to do on it is gaming and just browsing and typing for school etc. So I came up with this but I'd like your opinions before I present it to him.

One question I have is whether this gpu cooler is ok for the prodigy or whether a reference one would be better because it blows the heat out of the back. Also would a pentium K maybe be better with a decent cooler (and which one) or is this i5 a good choice?

Thanks for any help! :)

Looks fine. The GPU cooler will be fine in a Prodigy, and the Pentium G3258 is near-useless against an i5.

I would recommend getting a Xeon E3-1231v3 or 4690k instead (Xeon if not OC'ing, 4690k if OC'ing). The CPU is slightly underpowered IMO. This also means getting a Z97 board but the MSI Z97-G55 SLI is not very expensive and it is quite a capable board.

I think the cooler will be fine in combination with the Prodigy.

But I think 550 w PSU is kinda overkill especially if you/your friend is not overclocking.

other than that I think this build will last a long time (prefromance wish)

He might OC his gpu, would it still be overkill then?

I have an i5-3470 currently in my system which is very comparable to the 4460 and I can do everything just fine, it never struggles with anything really, even when I use Final Cut Pro X or Logic Pro X on my hackintosh installation. So I don't think it'll be worth spending the extra money on for him; he will only be gaming and doing simple stuff remember.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

That CPU doesn't natively run on the mobo you choose. It needs a bios update which you can only do if a previous gen Haswell is installed - you should get a cheap H97 board instead.

@jvkeizer

Build looks pretty balanced to me.

- motherboard may not work with  natively without latest bios (ninja'd by @SuperPug while I was typing)

- you should get a 2x4GB kit of ram

Looked up the serial, it's actually a 2x4GB kit. Thought it was only 4 at first too :P

I still think its overkill because the videocard is very power efficient and a moderate overclocked CPU will not draw that much more so 450w should be more then enough

Then I'll look for a cheap H97 board, thanks to the two of you!

Ok then I'll change it to a 450W, thank you!
