The homework thread

SSOB

Guys ur homework aint nothing. ive been on my English GCSE Language Coursework for over 5 hours now and i aint even finished. I hate it when they tell u to submit it a day early at the last minute (darn-it!)

Speaking of English...that double negative lol. So I assume our homework is something? :P

Two vectors are parallel to each other if their cross product = 0 (since the magnitude of the cross product is also defined as |a||b|sin(theta),where theta = 0 when both vectors are parallel). Another way of understanding this, given that this is only in 2D is to think of it as what scalar multiplication of vector b makes vector b have both the j components of vector a and b cancel each other to create a new vector that only has some scalar multiplication of i. Through the cross product shown below, where x = 5, you can see this more clearly.

Thanks that has cleared it up especially the visulaisation. For the second question do I make it so that the variable makes i and j equal as it is parallel to i + j?

Yup. I'd just do the cross product to make everything easier. Tbh, I only could figure out that 2nd explanation by doing the cross product, and just worked backwards to show you that the 5j and -5j cancel out.

Thanks for the explaination, I also got our sub teacher to explain this to me as I had maths before you could respond.

I've got something here:

6x-6y/4y-4x

y-x/xy-y^2

4a-2b/4a^2+b^2-4ab

x^2+y^2-z^2-2xy/x^2-y^2+z^2+2xz

These are supposed to be simplified. We were trying to solve this for like an hour and didn't come up with a rational answer, so I'm asking for help here. I personally hate this stuff

Thanks a lot! Now we all get it, it seems we forgot that we can pick a number to multiply the bracket with.

Thanks again.
