Budget: Roughly 2000 US dollars

Location: US, no Microcenters nearby

Aim: Gaming/Potential Streaming and Video Editing

Monitors: Two 1080p Monitors, Third to be added in the future

Peripherals unnecessary, OS unnecessary.

Upgrading because my current case is broken, has horrible airflow, and no cable management.  Many parts are over 3 years old now, and I am unhappy with most things.

Currently owned parts:

- i5 2500k (3 years old)

- cheap AsRock Motherboard (3 years old)

- 16 gb (4x4 gb) DDR3 (half 3 years half 1 year old)

- 64 gb Crucial SSD (3 years old)

- Two 256 gb Samsung 840 Evo SSDs (raid 0, half a year old)

- 500 gb WD Caviar blue HDD (3 years old)

- EVGA 780 ti ACX SC (1 year old)

- Corsair 750AX PSU (3 years old)

- Random Optical Drive (3 years old)

- Some old aftermarket heatsink, not worth looking up what its called. (3 years old)

The problems I'm having currently:

1. My Case is garbage.  I absolutely want a new case with great cable management and airflow.  Must also be cat proof.

2. My motherboard was cheap.  At the time money was a larger constraint than now.  It's already broken one of the PCIe slots.

3. Storage was originally minimal.  "You can add more HDDs anytime!" Well, I did, but I still am unhappy with how small the boot drive (the 64 gb one) is, and the lack of larger storage.  I added the SSDs purely because Battlefield 4 loads so slow that you would start a round losing purely from load times.  The SSDs fixed that, but I'm probably going to make them the boot drive now.

4. My i5 likes to crash randomly under load.  It's very infrequent, so I haven't bothered trying to lower the overclock or tune it better, but I'm assuming that's the cause.  It's been OC'd to 4.4GHz for it's entire life.

5. I need to reinstall windows soon anyways.  Something recently corrupted some registry files and now I'm having tons of issues and can't seem to just fix it.  I might as well solve all my problems at once.

So problems I have with upgrading: I don't feel that getting a 4970K is a big enough leap from a 2500K.  Can anyone convince me otherwise?  The new extremes seem like a good enough point to upgrade for the extra core, but the DDR4 is so expensive.  Also, getting another 780ti seems like it would be too much power consumption for my little old 750W PSU.  Don't PSUs become worse over time?

So yeah, my build plans now:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($387.57 @ Amazon)  =>
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($125.31 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI Plus ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($228.79 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (Purchased For $0.00)  => Reused as boot drive (Raid 0)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (Purchased For $0.00) => Reused as boot drive (Raid 0)
Storage: Hitachi Deskstar 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($73.49 @ Amazon) => New Storage/Games Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB Superclocked ACX Video Card (2-Way SLI)  (Purchased For $0.00)  => Reused as main video card
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB Superclocked ACX Video Card (2-Way SLI)  ($579.99 @ Newegg)  => Adding second to SLI for increased performance?
Total: $1655.14

I need a case that is great.  One that will last me for 10 years of whatever I may build in the future.  Is the cooler overkill?  Is there anywhere to cut costs?  Would selling my 780ti and getting 980s be better? Can you convince me that a 4970K build is better for me?  Thanks.

@Aphoristic Hello & Do you have a budget? I'd advise going to the subsection under builds then finding a threaded pinned at the top of the topics about a new build. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

You don't seem to need a X99 platform but the Z97 might be more comfortable & less expensive. I'd keep the power supply.

For the mouse depends entirely on your preferences.

Deathadder is a good mouse, I understand that you really want to go to the x99 platform but that is mainly for content producers so unless you are planning on creating videos with intensive effects and such, z97 will be more than enough and you can uuse that extra money to buy a larger ssd. I would recommend getting a 2tb wd red drive for a new hdd and keep the psu. Also the fractal design define r4 seems to be a case that people like, but a solid budget would be needed in order for me to actually recommend you sutff

What are your main uses for the computer?

I'd recommend at least a 250gb SSD, if not more. 128gb is fine just for the OS, but if you have more space you can throw your most played games on there as well; really, I try and get anything that runs on the SSD, and leave the HDD for storage of media and other files that I don't access very often.

1440p is nice, but you will likely be limited to ~60fps, and if you really want max settings on all games then you'll likely need to double up on your graphics cards.

Cases are very personal things; what some love, others hate. It's best to figure out what you want in a case and we can suggest some from there.

Lastly, without a budget, it's next to impossible to recommend anything at all. :)

Yeah, sorry I forgot to list budget.  Honestly, I don't really care about the budget too much, as long as its not like 3000 dollars I am fine with it.

I realize this, but I don't feel justified upgrading to z97 where as upgrading to x99 feels like a more worthwhile investment.

I guess you could go X99 but I'm not sure if it'll be worth buying it if you're basically gaming + streaming (& maybe a little bit of multi-media with video editing.)

It might feel like a worthwhile investment, but games haven't even all shifted to using more than 4 cores, only a select few do. Thus to have more than that on the x99 platform is simply a waste of money, but if you really want to have a x99 cpu just for that feeling then i can't really stop you lol

Again, I'm perfectly fine spending extra for the X99 regardless of how much you think I need it.  To me the value of switching from a 2500k to an 4970k is nothing.  I might as well stick with my current cpu/mobo/case which are all the parts I'm unsatisfied with.

it's actually not a bad idea at all to stay with your current set up and just move it to a different case, add a new hdd and ssd, and add an extra 780ti, BUT if you really want a new build for the sake of burning the past :P

The problem is that I also want longevity with this.  I don't want to have to touch things for another 4 years.  That CPU has been running overclocked for over 3 years and has had some infrequent instability.  The MOBO is a cheap Asrock that has a broken PCI-E slot from when I switched from an AMD video card to the 780ti a year ago.  The case is the worst part of it all, bad airflow, no cable management at all, broken fan.

right, I understand I was just pulling your leg a little, sorry if it came off as offensive :D But ya, that build I linked should suit your purposes well, tell me if you have any questions

also if you want the build to be quiet you could add the new noctua fans to it

5820k vs 5930k - Does the 5930k reach a higher clock?  Would it be worth the extra for that?  If not, would it be worth it if I added in a second 780ti to take advantage of the additional PCI-E lanes?

The 5820K is fine for 2 way SLI. You won't see much difference between the two cpu's as far as pci-e lanes goes.

The 780ti cards might start coming down in price now that the 900 series is out, although it would be a good idea to grab a 2nd one while you still can as they are now discontinued.

Okay, but getting a second 780ti will force me to upgrade the PSU as 750W won't be enough, right?

Your Corsair psu is fine for SLI 780ti  :)

This gives you an idea of power consumption - http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/gtx-780-ti-sli-geforce-review,4.html

As you can see that system draws 508W with an i7 3960X cpu, and under full stress it is 617W.
