980 future performance....

SlaughterSmurf

Okay this is just predictions, how do you guys think the 980 will perform when drivers are more optimized? I see everyone is saying that the 970 matches the 780ti right now so I am thinking of using Step-Up to get the 980

The 980 matches the 780ti.

Probably quite a bit.

Well let me recommend you waiting for the reference 980 to be added to the Step-up inventory, the reference cooler is actually better than ACX 2.0.

From all the benchmarks I've seen its very much a game by game basis whether or not the 970 matches/beats the 780Ti.  Some games not even the 980 matches/beats it although these were stock benchmarks.
How much would it cost you to step-up?

I've oc'd my 980 and it beats every 780 ti except a watercooler 780 ti kingpin :P

Not really they are a lot closer to that, it falls on overclocking. I don't know if you know this but maxwell comes clocked crazy. Stock cards boost to over 1200 where you have the ti boosting to like 940?

Driver optimizations do indeed happen.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Well I have been test 4K via MSR and I must say I am impressed.

Boost 2.0 getting me to 1398Mhz @ 74c

GeForce 344.16 Driver

Borderlands 2 Max setting gets around 45Fps

My OC'd 980 beats every 780 ti except a 780 ti kingpin on water. I know they come clocked crazy. Im on a reference 980 im sitting at around 1367 base and 1456 boost and im running at 32-36C idle

Is it actually? Well either way I only have like 9 days to wait...

Yes, it's not that large of a diffirence, but you would expect a non-reference cooler to be quite a bit less noisy and have a lot better temps than stock, but with the ACX 2.0 your temps still sit around 75-80°C, just like reference, but also it's not quieter at all, according to some reviews it's actually noiser. I wouldn't expect that from a card that is €20 over reference and also doesn't look nearly as good.

Yeah, no. Linus' 780ti is neck in neck with the 980 except in bioschock. Their reference 780ti is clocked at 1300mhz and their 980 is clocked at 1500mhz. The kepler cores have a little better performance per clock over maxwell, they are not even. So I am pretty sure even my 780ti at 1240mhz is just a pinch slower or on par than your 980.  Like I said it's all based on overclock. And you can put whatever card you want on water, it won't mean if for sure going to run faster.

Okay, And all I was saying is if you are looking at review benchmarks then you are not looking at overclocked benchmarks. The real world difference is definitely far from noticeable at this time. Maybe because it's a different architecture we will see driver improvements. Over kepler.

Well the future for GTX 980 is not so good, because nvidia will launch soon other GPU`s maxwell base but with high and better performance, like a GTX 980 Ti or something like this... who know.. The best card to have is GTX 970 for now ;)

CPU : Intel i7 2600K OC@ 4.5 GHz ;

MOBASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 ;

RAM Corsair 8 GB DDR3 1866 MHz ;

GPU EVGA GTX 680 2Gb (GTX 770 Bios modded and instaled with voltage and fan speed unlock) OC@ 1228 MHz on GPU and 7012 MHz on Memory ;

I'm sure with Maxwell they've thrown a lot of spanners and monkeys at it.

They gave us the 750Ti to moisten our shorts with Price>Performance but in all the time since, have been quietly doing good on them.

Just stating this to not expect 30% improvements with a simple driver just yet, moreso the 30% will be over the lifetime, and initial driver improvements will be 5-7% each for however long it takes to wring out all the performance.

Not trying to be negative,.. just history paints the picture pretty well.

I'm considering the GTX970 (With further reductions in price or a special deal somewhere) to replace my setup and give this 290 to my Mum /Getting her 4 Xmas or beforehand,..a 2560x1080p for her movies/office docs (she stated she hates duals)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I didn't even notice, 601 posts now but that pales in comparison to a lot of the people on here, 2500+ posts, I have even seen as high at 8000 before, heck the guy above me has almost 3400
