I am about to set up a RAID 0 with two WD SE16's, but as I am using HDTune to make sure there are no SMART errors popping up before I do this, its telling me my harddrive is 43c, and i 100% believe it, its pretty warm to the touch... The WD blue in the same system is running at 33c. Is 43.... normal? Its in a Nantec P182 with the bottom fan on low, so it is getting at least a little airflow over it...

The other drive is probably idle and thats why it's running cooler. 43C is not a problem but do try do lower it a little bit. Increase the fan rpm. :)

Edit: Normal temps range from 30 to 50C, but if it gets close to 50C you need a lot more airflow. :)

Thanks for the info. Yea I will try and mount it more directly in front of the fan (there are 4 harddrive spots in the cage, and I will only need 2 drives). I might be able to up the RPM of the fan a bit, I just like the PC very quiet. Currently its basically none audible at idle.

Hmmmh, here is what you can do. Place the 1st drive in the 1st slot and place the 2nd drive in the last spot so there is more room between them so they don't heat up each other. That should keep them both cooler so you won't have to increase the fan speed.

I put a 100mm fan as case front intake in front of my two drives, keeps them under 35c at all times. :)

Currently my 43c fan is in slot one. With a hhd next to it but not even plugged in. I think I will end putting one in slot 2 and one in slot 4. And taking out the drive I don't need (there are three drives in there, only 2 are plugged in and I only actually need two).

43 C is acceptable, the disks in my server run between

28 C and 42 C, and I try to stay below 45 C, although

most drives are certified to something between 50 C and

60 C even.

More info on this can be found in this study from Google

Hey there,

This is pretty acceptable temperature at which the drive should function normally without any issues. These drives have been designed to work at even higher temperatures so I wouldn't worry about that too much. I would make sure, though, that the drives get good airflow just in case.

Concerning the S.M.A.R.T. status, I would try WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and run both the quick and the extended tests to check the health of the drive as well as for any bad sectors. You don't want to risk your data, especially in RAID0. Here's a link: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810〈=en

Do have in mind that this drive was not designed for RAID environments (does not have TLER and other important features) and you might experience problems with it. I would recommend having a backup of all your important data on an external drive in case something happens with your drives.

Hope this helps,

Captain_WD.

Thanks for the info. This computer has none critical data (my HTPC) my data is on my nas. So data loss isn't a huge issue. Thanks for the heads up tho.
