Help with Pentium G3258 overclocking

Hello LTT forums,

 

 

I have trouble getting my CPU up to and beyond 4GHz! Even with voltages such as 1.4V it cannot get past login screen(seizure)

 

I can do 3.9GHz at 1.150V and survive an IBT.

 

I have a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3, Pentium G3258 AE and 16GB Corsair Vengeance / XMS3 Mixed ram(should I remove the xms? they worked fine on my previous FX8120 build while OCing, but if you guys deem it worth to remove I will give it a go. 

 

If you need anything, please don't hesistate to ask - I got this CPU to stopgap broadwell and seeing as it'd be beast at emulating when overclocked I'd love to get it overclocked!

1. You shouldn't be putting it above 1.3v or so, even with a beast cooler.

2. Does your MOBO have an automatic overclock function? if it does then try that to see how far it can go.

3. What cooler do you have?

Knew I missed stuff,

 

1. Yeah I know, I ran it just to see if it'd boot and be stable enough (was really not planning on keeping it)

2. Not that I know of or can find in both adv and old style bios(what I'm using)

3. atm I'm using the intel HSF, I know it is not god tier but it should at least let me login at 4ghz?

 

My other specs are in sig, psu is the same however I'm using an intel 520 ssd now

 

I am ordering the following soon:

New power supply (750W EVGA G2)

CM Hyper 412S (Found it for the same price as the 212EVO)

and some other stuff

 

The Novatech powerstation is a rebrand OCZ ModXStream (just an FYI)

 

I dropped back to 3.8 1.15v for now

just up the multiplier leave volts on auto

im currently at 4.4 with 1.23v. on stock memory speed (1333mhz). i would try setting all settings to default an just trying the overclock..

I'll try leaving volts and LLC on auto now, will edit with results

I never touched the cooler, left every on auto except vcore was upped to 1.25v, and if I remember correctly I was able to hit 4.4 with decent temps under full load. It is possible you just got a CPU that wont overclock well ,it happens. I will assume you're on the latest BIOS and temps are in check?

Yep updated bios to F5 and temps are well below TCase

 

Leaving everything but multi on auto at 4.4GHz causes BSOD on boot,

 

4.0GHz causes bsod on IBT (clock_watchdog_timeout)

Id love to help ya but im sending my board for my pentium in today.

95c is tjmax and it runs ~ 60c with max I've seen being 83c

100%ing it at 3.8 is giving me 67c

Any other ideas guys? I've got all night to get this working... All my ideas are exhausted, I can only think either dud CPU or poor PSU.

 

 

I will try take out the non matching ram now see how that goes...

have you tried reapplying thermal paste?

with stock cooler it did good for me too

I saw high 70's to low 80's on the stock cooler. I would agree with you. Either CPU or PSU. Maybe go down to 1 stick of ram and test?

I have some AS5 I can use to apply, I don't think it's temps causing this issue though and seeing as I'm getting the CM heatsink soon IDK if it'd be worth

 

Running gigabyte autotuning stuff seeing how that goes, if it fails will drop to 1 stick and go again

So, news!

 

I ran Gigabyte EasyTune aaand

 

It fucking overclocked to 4.2 straight away

 

I feel beaten by a program, what am I doing wrong? Bios bug? 

 

I clicked on 4.6 just to see if it'd work... Yep. Worked. Booted. Stable (temps not so much, immediate 95c on IBT!)

 

Is there a bug or settings I'm missing? I feel legit beaten by a bot.

adjust your settings in the BIOS

 

what were the volts at 4.6?

 

 

if you have to use software, use Intel Extreme Tuning Utility

Gigabyte set volts for 4.2 to 1.16V and 4.6 to 1.35V, both of which I've tried and seize at login (which is why I'm finding this weird)
