REALLY weird problem! PLZ HALP!

Go to solution Solved by bmanzzs,

Sorry for the bump, just wanted to give some more info if this ever comes up in a Google search. After Chrome auto updated to that last version, it appears the issue has completely gone away... Except for in Canary.

That's okay though, I can live with that.

Chrome and Canary both crash about 90% of the time when I either unplug or re-plug in my AC adaptor to my laptop. It's a Yoga 2 Pro.

The error is "Google Chrome encountered a problem and needs to close".

I've tried reinstalling Chrome, but that does not help. I've tried clearing my cache, cookies, everything to no avail. I've even tried deleting my entire Chrome profile in appdata, but still that does nothing. Same thing with removing extensions. I also have it set so the Windows power scheme stays the same on AC or battery.

Google search results give me absolutely NO information about this particular problem. It seems no one else has encountered this.

This has me completely stumped. If anyone could help, that would be amazing! Thank you.

That is a really weird problem. So you say that you Googled the problem with little to no success?

Indeed. Many people have encountered the same error message, but I couldn't find one person that says it crashes specifically only when changing AC power.

This one really has me stumpted. Maybe I'm the only person in the world who has encountered this  :o

Have you tried disabling all extensions? It could be a Google Chrome add-on causing this problem. Just a thought.

Speculation :- Hardware rather than software.

Change in voltage?

Perhaps the difference in voltage/current from the battery and the adaptor is showing as a spike in the laptops circuitry and this is causing the software in question to crash if this has been a problem since day one perhaps the lappy should be exchanged under warranty, if a new problem perhaps the battery is dying and needs to be replaced.

Appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately, I have tried that already and it does not help. In fact, I have NO extensions running at all and it has crashed almost every time i unplugged/replgged power tonight.

That is not a bad speculation. This has been happening for a while, but I don't think since initial purchase. Bought it 6 months ago, started occuring maybe 3 months ago(?) But why in the world would Chrome cause itself to crash, even if it did measure a spike?

May I suggest you go to Chrome's Settings, Show advanced settings, disable hardware acceleration and try again?

Some laptops switch GPU modes and this might set off the GPU renderer in chrome.

Alternatively, see if you can change the power schemes in windows so that whatever it is that it changes, are the same in both AC and battery mode.

Sorry, just being an ass :P

I will try disabling HW acceleration. So far it hasn't crashed, but when I said 90% of the time this is when Chrome is running for a while. If I don't crash after a couple of hours of Chrome browsing and unplugging/replugging, then I know it worked.

It'l be interesting to see if this prevents crashing! Thanks for the suggestion.

@bfmanzzs

I didn't mean battery and AC are using different power options merely that perhaps as the unit is switched from one to the other there is enough of a difference to spark off some sort of failure, this  difference being a physical thing (i.e. somethings broken) rather that some setting needs to be changed.

TBH I do not know what the problem is or how to sort it, it is just an idea for you to explore.  I hope it is just a setting that needs changing/piece of software that is active (Edit:-here's hoping your hardware acceleration change does the trick) but I 'feel in my water' that it will be hardware related and you will have to throw money at it.

Supplementary thought :-Can you borrow[1] a working battery for your laptop and see if the error still occurs?

[1]  I know Maplins (a British electronics store. Perhaps Fry's, Microcentre et al have the same returns policy) will do full, no questions asked, refunds for items returned in fully saleable condition, perhaps a battery could be sourced from them then if you find it doesn't solve your problems return the battery for a full refund,  do this on the QT though.

Thank you for the suggestions. I also have a bad feeling you're right, but I'm hoping it's merely a software issue. I will probably try reinstalling Windows 8 before buying a test battery, as it's a pain to open up a Yoga 2 to replace the internal one. I will try warranty service and hardware replacement as a last resort, considering it's a relatively minor issue, I think. These are great ideas though. I appreciate it.

And unfortunately, it still crashes just as consistently with HW acceleration off @  :(

A:  the charger

B: the battery

C mobo? maybe?

Have a similar problem with my laptop, which I use when traveling.

My hp dv6 from 2012 no longer works on battery. Try booting on battery and after the starting windows screen the display turns off and stays off, idling. Unplug it when in 7 and it freezes permanently, until you force a shutdown. Mobo or battery in my case.

DV6's were complete piles of shit anyway. The 6000 version was recalled for battery fires.

Hope you get it resolved

Good Luck.

Reading a bit back through, the only thing you didn't try was a New Porfile,
to create the easiest way is log into the pc as another user with Administrative rights, find your User folder \users\YourName
Raname it to \Youname_Old or something

log out then back in as you. you will have to set some stuff back up but could also clear the issue.
