Lower resolution with DisplayPort Adapter

I recently purchased a displayport adapter for my aging vga 1440x900 monitor and when i use it it sets the resolution to 1024x768. This doesn't occur with my DVI-D adapter. Any suggestions to it being a faulty adapter and alternatives?

Its a generic one with no brand identification whatsoever I bought in store.

Why don't you keep using the DVI-to-VGA-Adapter?

 

 

Most DVI-to-VGA Adapters are passive

All DP-to-VGA Adapters are active

I can't set it any higher. When ever I use it, it calls an error and locks it to 1024x768

Its probably not passing the EDID properly being its not a passive pass through. Can you set a custom resolution for it?
