This is confusing me. Help please.

There are 3 consecutive even numbers. Five times the third integer plus the first integer equals 104. Find the second integer. Find the two consecutive numbers whose sum is 119

This is confusing the shit out of me. Thanks

A 14

B 16

C 18

That's the 104 bit

May I ask how you got it?

no, just use those as your numbers, then make equations with them, however the numbers in the assignment want...

@Firearm2112

I'm European so bear with me. Use x, (x+2), (x+4) then write down these equations:

5(x+4) + x = 104    ----- 6x + 20 = 104   ------ x = 14  -------- Second integer = (x+2) = 14+2 = 16

Second question:

x + (x+1) = 119   -----  x = 59, (x+1) = 60

Hope this helps! :)

probably, i didnt check the numbers. but these kinds of assignments give you the way to solve them in the task itself

the one comment i have to say about this is that the usual (best?) way to represent an even number is 2x, so it should have been

1st number = 2x

2nd number = 2x + 2 = 2(x + 1)

3rd number = 2x + 4 = 2(x + 2)

then substitute in the given equation and you're done

It's not necessary for this particular question though.

yeah, but the exercise would serve no purpose by itself, its point is to be able to translate propositions into symbols, so i think it's best (and doesn't take much effort) to pay attention to these details

if the scope was to just get the solution of this particular problem you could use naive approaches like the one with a huge paint image in the previous posts, but good luck if you then have to work with more complex things and you're used to just go with "intelligent trial and error"

I agree with you, it could be useful in long term but I've always used ''x'' and never had a problem.

dat pun
