Hi All,

Whenever I play BF4 or run Valley, about 5-10 minutes in my recently built PC shuts down. No BSOD or anything, just like someone flicked off the power supply.

I can recreate this issue by running Unigine Valley on Ultra preset with IntelBurnTest running behind it.

I haven't taken a look at my RAM yet, but I have MemTest86+ on a USB ready to run tonight.

My specs are:

FX-6300 (non OC'd)

Sapphire R7 265 (non OC'd)

ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 mobo

8GB Kingston ValueRam

Cougar SL500 500W PSU

Any suggestions on what the issue could be? Or anything else I should be testing?

Thanks

EDIT: I forgot to add that I am unable to turn the PC back on until I turn the PSU switch off and on.

I also concur, its probably not getting enough power.  As components heat up electricity flows differently and (usually) needs more power to continue to operate.  So after spending a few minutes and getting nice and toasty the PSU probably doesn't have the juice to keep it going.

Not use to "cougar" PSU's so I have to imagine they aren't that great (not saying they are bad, but probably not great).

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

What you COULD do, is just down clock the CPU a few mhz...  take it from 3.5 to 3.3, you wouldn't notice that big of a performance hit but it might be enough to cause it not to want as much power.  Or you could just turn turbo boost off.  ASRock is actually kinda famous for not having good power phase design on a lot of their mid/low end boards too.

So are you saying that the PSU isnt pumping out enough power? Or that the PSU isnt getting enough power from the house's circuit? Because an FX-6300 and R7 265 should definately not be pulling 500W.

No, Im trying to say that the PSU probably isn't accurate.  You need to look at the rail voltages and AMPs to know.  In essence Im saying your PSU is garbage.  And yes a 6300 and a 265 under full load probably will pull right around 500 watts

mhmm, I reposted this thread in the PSU section, and they are saying that its caused by heat?

I noticed, you posted it in about 3 different sections that I have noticed...

As I have posted just a second ago, it is pulling about 430 watts at full load.  If the PSU is like other PSU's it will NEVER output the full amount as the full amount is determined by "perfect" conditions ie: room temps, AC current, load balance, ect.

Is that your PSU?

Edit:

Because if it is...  (see picture)

Right about where the PSU calculator is estimating it at...  *hum, what a hum-dinger we got here*.  The components are heating up a little bit, requiring a little bit more power, and your PSU cant deliver.

TRY underclocking the CPU and GPU a little.  I personally would just turn turbo boost off.  If that solves the problem we KNOW its the PSU.  if the components are overheating it will still eventually overheat with it underclocked a little.

hmm I'm probably gonna borrow a friend's 750W to test if I cant get this one working.

I shall give that a go soon, but I noticed that turbo boost was already disabled (weird).

Well I underclocked the CPU to 3Ghz, and the GPU to 800mhz. No shutdown or anything! Im guessing it must be the PSU not giving me enough juice.

3.0 is a little bit much, try 3.3.  And in the AMD CCC profile see if there is a option to just give the GPU ~7% less power and keep it ~5% cooler (raise the top fan speed to reach this)

---

Edit:  Change the things I have circled in blue to use less power, and run cooler.  Leave the clock speeds at stock.  Like I said 3.3Ghz should be plenty low enough.

Well, so far what I've done is restore everything to default (still with latest bios and beta drivers), underclocked my CPU to 3300mhz and left the GPU clock at 925, but turned down the power limit by 8%.

I also discovered that before I do any of this, DayZ makes the computer crap itself within 30 seconds of loading into the menu, so thats my new testing software :P

Update:

5 Minutes in, it seems to be working :D Thanks for all the help everyone! I will run IntelBurnTest and Valley for a bit later and double check that its all good :)
