Looking for a monitor to run from laptop

Ryan Ras

Hello

I am looking at getting a monitor to run from my laptop (lenovo Y50 w gtx 860m) so I will only be able to use a monitor with a hdmi port. I will be using it for games, movies and university work. I have been looking at some 27 inch monitors but they are 1920x1080 and from what I have been reading people dont think its worth getting 27 inch monitors at anything below 1440p. I dont want to spend more than $300 on it. I am looking at a few at the moment as well as some 24 inch ones and one of them is a 144hz gaming monitor but with how I am planning to use it I am thinking its not going to be any benefit? If people could please give me their opinion on this and what they think about the 27 inch monitors or should I just stick with a 24 inch.

here are the monitors I have been looking at

Haven't checked the monitors out yet but I'd like to just advise you on what you should get given your situation and outlook.

A 60Hz, IPS panel @ 24 inches would probably be ideal for you, 5ms is preferred but really up to 8 is alright.

I'll get back to you on what I'd suggest with those monitors after having a look at them.

Edit:

I suggest the ASUS PA248Q because it is IPS and has less than an 8ms response time with it only being 24 inches. The 1920 x 1200 is a bit of an oddball resolution but if you can find a use for them extra 120 pixels than it may be a better decision over just a 1080p display.

Edit:

What about this:

It's a 1080p, 60Hz, IPS display with HDMI and is 23'. It also has a 5ms grey to grey and has height adjust along with a VESA mounting option.

So you agree that a 27 inch monitor at 1920x1080 is not a good move?

Also do you think this is pretty much the same as the LG one, the reason I like this a little more i that the base seems a bit smaller and I have limited desk space so that would be nicer

It does have a 6ms grey to grey but I cant imagine that 1ms would be noticeable.

Thanks

I agree with the 27" 1080p monitor is a bad move.

the PB238Q has a really good stand, which can often be overlooked when looking at monitors. It should have a great display panel, and you are right about the response rates. Pretty much all modern monitors have response rates that are acceptable.
