Engineering Prerequisite's

Hi so i'm in grade 10 (15 yo) and I have course selection for grade 11 in a few weeks, and I am wondering what courses I should take in grade 11 to pursue an engineering program (Computer or electrical engineering)?

What are your options ?

Basically anything related to maths, physics, statistics, chemistry, ... i.e. sciences

look at the websites for the Universities you want to attend Each are different in some ways, but generally pretty generic.

It's different depending on where you live

Generally it's

Pre-calculus, sometimes calculus in addition

Chemistry

Physics

I'm in Canada (Toronto) and am hoping to go to a U.S. school or UofT.

Ohhh ok. Well it's the same for every uni here I assume. I remember checking out UoT & Waterloo awhile back but forgot their requirements. I went to Ryerson Mechanical engineering instead. They need six 12U/M courses + adv functions, calculus, physics, chemistry. So for Gr11, you'll need 11 functions, physics, and chem for now.

Just be warned that UoT eng is pretty hard to get into.

I'm prepared to have minimal free time and have basically no social life for the next two years so I can focus on marks and extra curriculars.

http://www.ece.utoronto.ca/prospective-students/admissions/

According to UoT, they don't require AP calc. I'm not sure if it'll give you an edge come admissions in 2 years so you gotta talk to them. But I would not risk taking Calc in gr11 unless you have a very strong sense in math. I believe UoT doesn't take 2nd chances in marks, so you can't retake the course if you do poorly. See how you do in adv func first and use that to judge whether you should drop calc in your 2nd semester of grade 11. Then again, calculus isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. You just gotta be very fast in your algebra to not make mistakes (especially when you're taking the chain rule of a product rule and quotient rule all together in a short amount of time on the test).

Take this with no offense. Grade 10 math is easy. Very easy. Like so easy that when you compare it to 12 calculus, a mere 2 years later, you'll wonder wtf is the TDSB thinking. Anyhow take that for what you will.

The Asian 5 is pretty much what you need for pre-req in year 12:

Methods Math

Specialist Math

Physics

Chemistry

English (Mandatory), or Literature (if you're so inclined)

However, Specialist math isn't avail until year 12 so do the year 12 general math in year 11 to fill that spot and get a few extra points that way.

Like me, if your school makes you do 6 subjects in year 11 then pick a bludge subject, not accounting, that's not a bludge subject, I learnt that the hard way.

*I'm not entirely sure how the school system works in Toronto but I think it would have similar subjects

Hey, i'm currently doing an Electrical and Computer engineering course and what everyone's telling you is true, but just a recommendation if your school offers a programming, Auto Cad or electronics elective i'd recommend taking those as well.

I go to a private school so I don't know what material is taught in the public schools.

I'm currently in computer aided drafting 2 and its probably one of the most beneficial classes you can take. The first year we did hand drawings and the second half of the year we basically re did the drawings on the computer with autocad. This year we are focusing on more techincal drawings with auto cad and next year we will be doing 3d animation with software called revit I beleive. I am also enrolled in a robotics club where we compete against other teams regionally. Physics class would probably be your best bet for your last 2 years of high school im currently taking chemistry and that's hell just a warning there. But definately take CAD if your school offers it its not the most exciting class but its one of the most use full as we use the software on our robotics team to help design the robots.

Are you in High school and do you live in Toronto (if so what school). Just wondering if you compete against my schools robotics team.

I go to a private school so I don't know what material is taught in the public schools.

It should be the same, as the standard to get into university in Ontario is standardized through Ontario public courses (I believe). So Grade 10 math has quadratics + some trig. Gr11 is introduction to functions (poly, trig,) and factoring. Gr 12 Adv func is exponential functions, log functions, long division of polynomials, and radians. Gr 12 Calc is limits, derivatives, natural log, limits of e, and intro to vectors (like cross/dot products, planes, equation of vector lines).

By any chance are you in UTS?

St. Michael s college school. But am possibly looking to switch schools and that is one of the places im looking at.
