But yeah, Google it. You are far better of with getting an i5 for gaming.

An i7 hardly gives improvement, if any, and can even decrease performance by micro-stuttering. That last part may or may not be true... Not entirely sure yet.

I want to multitask too so..

what gpu? and will you OC?

its a tough choice. clock for clock Ivy bridge is oddly ahead by a hair in gaming over haswell, and overclocks much easier. It's why I probably won't upgrade for a while, at least until dx12 is out and more threads is actually worth it.

if you are doing rendering/encoding, Haswell may be a better option.

Lol, an i5 doesn't mean you can't multitask.

An i7 is for video editing. You're literally throwing money away if you are going to game and go for the i7. It has no + for your use case. I would highly advise you to get an i5 and invest the spare money in an SSD or something.

i have a i7 #NoRegrets but i would say that maybe a i5 is mk for you.

It just isn't beneficial to the OP at all since he won't make use of hyperthreading. And that's all the difference it is. Hyperthreading.

I would just go for a better GPU or SSD man, way better overall.

I do some pretty heavy multitasking on a 4690K don't see why you'd need an i7 for that :P

Why these 2 CPUs anyway?

I7 with ht on will increase both bench scores and gaming performance. Don't listen to the plebs. I7 master race.

Would you pay $120 more for a video card if it gave ~1 fps more?

no, but i did paid 50$ more for a cpu that compute 30% faster :P

Modern open world games like watchdogs and deadrising 3 already take advantage of it and many more in the future will i'm sure (Star Citizen!!)

here, tested this myself i made this video, look at the difference in GPU load between the i5 and i7:

And please note that all the cpus tested took advantage of the extra cache from the i7...

3:37 starts the i5-4670 and then the i7.

Even so, just for gaming an i7 isn't really a valid perf gain yet :P

no that's true i completely agree with you as of now only a couple games takes real advantage of HT and even then a core i5 is still sufficient to provide optimal experience except for Watchdogs...but maybe in the future we might see some more games in which having a stronger CPU will make a bigger difference...or maybe not :P but at least i'll not be able to blame myself again cause i bought the best CPu available i can afford so i'll never have to ask myself ''what if i had bought an i7 instead''

And...it's strange, but from reports I've seen from many users in here the i7-2600K would be doing much better at modern gaming than the i5-2500K does. It stood the test of time better.

After all HT is not only about ''more threads processing'' it's also an implemented way to do better scheduling and faster data processing from the CPU cores themselves so even a dual or quad threaded load can be processed more efficiently with HT in some circumstances.

It's more than that. But you can be ignorant if you wish.

OK. Riddle me this then.
