Thinking about maybe getting an asus 970 STRIX, does anyone know if the ROG logo lights up? If so, what colour (probably red). However I might wait till the AMD kick off their competitor cards.

I don't believe it lights up. IMO don't get the Strix. Even with a normal GPU you won't hear the fans at low load anyways, and it's better cooling for the VRMs and RAM to have the fans running even if you're not doing much.

Hmmm, fair enough. Sounds shallow but i like having some eye candy in my system.

The STRIX 970 is a Semi Passively cooled design. That alone make it worth a second glance and really is one of the main reasons I am getting one well that and the great price/performance.

ACX 2.0 sounds like one hell of a cooler.

NVIDIA still too expensive IMO, I'm also waiting for R9 3xx

nvidia 980 is priced a bit high in Canada but the 970 is an excellence price/performance proposition so much so that I am even picking one up and joining the ranks of the nvidiots once again.

Did you even read what I said before quoting? Yes, it's a semi passively cooled design. However even so, it doesn't matter that much since pretty much all non-reference coolers are inaudible at low fan speeds, while at heavy loads the STRIX will have it's fans on anyways, so it's just like any other non-reference.

Again, even at low loads, it's a better idea to have a card with fans always running to cool your VRAM and VRMs. It's not like you'll hear them.

I beg to differ. I think the engineers at nvidia and Asus know what the hell they are on about with the cooling capacity and needs of the architecture they have created and they guarantee with a warranty.

I would rather have my fans running at all times, at low RPM you dont hear them and power consumption is minimal at best

Power consumption from fans is being extremely fickle and unrealistic akin to picking out individual hairs one at a time instead of using some electric clippers then proceeding to attempting to split each hair with a scalpel and count how many calories you are burning while doing it LOL. Anyway if the fans don't need to run then why even turn them on is all i am saying.

I never said that STRIX is bad for the card, I said that it will still always be better to have fans running all the time at low RPM. There isn't room for debate on this. It's just pure better for keeping temps lower at idle on the GPU, VRAM, VRMs, and other components.

Also, STRIX cards cost quite a bit more then regular cards.... why spend the extra money for the hybrid fan? Something like auto start-stop in a car has an advantage because it saves you money on gas, but on a GPU, you're paying extra to go from inaudible to inaudible.

They cool other things than just the core.....evrything on the PCB needs cooling........i dunno, just my preference

Having fans running for no reason at all is pointless and creates un warranted noise. That saidd the STRIX 970 is the best one available because it used quality construction with aluminum not some cheap plastic shit like that used on EVGA plus STRIX comes with really nice back plate and it is cheaper than EVGA ACX in Canada at leased.

How many times has it been said? When it's in your case, pretty much all non-reference coolers will be inaudible at <65% load.

If anything, metal construction makes the card heavier, which causes more sag. No thank you. It's a GPU, not a phone. It doesn't stay in my hand for me to hold all day, it goes in my PC and processes graphics.

Don't worry I promise you Asus and nvidia know what they are doing.

Im sure they do (they Better!)...but as a consumer, the very little power your saving isnt worth it. Fans running at low rpm draw such little power.....its just my opinion, and im sure that setting could be change with software anyways

That is the other cooler I was looking at. But of course the R9 300 series is worth a look first.

Just stop those Gigabyte card are ugly and cannot match the slickness of the Asus STRIX 970 GPU. Oh an please the STRIX 970 is a OCed edition card so apples to apples it's comparable the the EVGA "SC" edition which costs more. That said the Asus card is better cause it has better quality aluminum construction C/W sexy ass back plate.

Whoever said the acx come as looking good hasn't read any reviews. It's as loud as the reference, and is beaten by the other cards available.

It's not about power as the power draw for a couple of tiny fans is insignificant. It's about SILENCE. I don't know why you are trying to split hairs here LOL.

You're the only one supporting the STRIX........

I know I don't need the SC version of the EVGA card, because I have the balls to overclock it myself, and I know that if I fuck up then EVGA's warranty still has my back.

Heck, even reference cards will be inaudible at the load that the fans on the Strix kick in.

Good for you but IMO and taste I rather pay the extra 10 bucks for the STRIX because at a minimum it comes with a sexy ass back plate and solid aluminum construction which the EVGA ACX does not.
