I currently have an HD 7870, should I crossfire it with another 7870 or an r9 270x?

It's not worth it to crossfire low end cards :)

7870 is by no means ... "Low End".

Why so?

Because crossfire carries a series of issues that you don't want to deal with unless you have no choice. It makes sense with very high end gpus because there is no other way to get more power than to have 2 or more. But a 7870/270x is not high end enough that you can't find a single gpu card that would perform about as well as two of them. Not to mention the cards would be heavily nerfed at high resolutions by the limited vram.

Upper mid range enthusiast card.

No, not really. That would be an R9 280. Right now the 7870/r9 270 are mid end.

7870 CFX is genius.... you can pick them up for like 100 each and then have 290 performance for $200! In his case he only needs one more, so for $100 get a not as good 290? HELL YES. Ive been contemplating doing it myself, but just never got around to doing it.

That's a flawed and erroneous logic. A Mid Range card of 2012 does not change to a Low end card because the 980 came out in 2014 LOL.

He's planning to buy a card NOW. Makes it mid end

It's will always be an upper mid range card. AMD 77xx low end, AMD 78xx mid range, AMD 79xx high end etc.

From a purely linguistical point of view, yes, but in practical terms, no. Getting two gtx 570s in sli today doesn't make sense because NOW they aren't even close to the high end. Now, we can sit here and have a pointless discussion on wether a card should or shouldn't be called mid end or move on, because honestly the answer doesn't change: it makes little to no sense.

The 570s are and always will be high end cards they just more or less suck now in days. A Corvette of the 80s gets stomped by a Mustang of current but that does not mean that the Corvette of the 80s is not a flagship high end sports car of the time.

Thank you for your responses. The reason for the question is I already have the 7870 and on a budget with a wife who's in school full time and 3 kids. I found several used 7870s on eBay for 100 as well as a r9 270x refurbished for close to the same. If I can get the 270x for cheap enough would it be worth it or just stick with 2 7870s?
