Trying to change my cpu fan form a stock cooler to a Corsair H55

I know I have to remove the motherboard to fit the fixing brackets... but I can only

get as far as trying to remove the exsisting fan/heatsink...

it seems to be stuck on... I don't want to be to heavy handed with it

I un-clipped it and even took the screws out of the fixing bracket but it seems to be stuck fast...

AM3+ cpu

Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-78LTM-USB3

any ideas or am I missing something ???... help please

To remove the stock heatsink you have to rotate the pins in the four corners before you can pull it up

It's an amd, not an Intel.

Old amds could be a bit tricky to remove. My first time I could take it off, but when I saw at the heatsink, there was a processor attached! Hahaha

I didn't broke it, but it's not healthy for your pc. Best you can do is warming up your processor, and remove heatsink, doing "circles" to both sides, and very patiently, remove it.

Thus is due to the thermal paste, which acts like a glue.

I guess this is the best explanation I can do... Sorry hehe

Well, looking at the picture, you need to deattach this piece of iron from the blue thing.

You have a lever at the opossite side, describe a semicircle with this lever, and then release the aluminium piece across the heatsink.

Edit: I mean this piece

Make sure that the metal clips are off both ends of the plastic parts on the board. You can turn on the PC for a bit to heat up the thermal compound which will soften it, then twist the heatsink as you remove it. Looks like you can't twist it because of the mounting pieces on the board. It''s worth noting that there is a part you turn to add tension to the cross bar that holds it down that you need to turn back to take off the cooler, the black plastic in this picture:

Funny how that is, I have the exact same problem with my rig. I also have a Gigabyte mainboard and an AM3+ CPU with the same cooler. I already tried the hairdryer without any sign of success. I did also used some isopropyl on the thermal paste but because of the thin layer I did not have any effect yet.

I'm a bit hazy on it, because it was quite some time ago, but I think I might not even have used new thermal paste.

Now I'm sitting with a brand new Noctua Cooler in my room and the only thin I can do is look at it. (They look kind of nice but I would like to use it though).

Edit: Solved! The local hardware dealer had the idea: use a morsa and just twist it of. Suffice to say that you sould be gentle and not apply too much pressure on the cpu.

Twisted right off.

Twist it a bit until it gets loose, don't force it unless you want take out the cooler together with the cpu.

If it doesn't, get a bit of thin hard plastic (from a package) and try to separate it from the cpu.
