Retention arm worries

I properly aligned the CPU and successfully locked the retention arm in place. Later I took the cpu out only to notice that there were slight dents were (I assume) the metal plate the holds the CPU in place had made contact with the top of the cpu. Is this bad?

^ If it's not that badly dented it should be fine

I'd say it has about an 0.5-1mm indention on two of the outer edges

Are slight indentions on the edge of the cpu ok in general?

No but seriously. show us something so we can tell you if it's bad. but one thing i can tell you. as long as it works and the dents are not ontop of the cpu where it makes contact with the cooler you won't have any problems.its just a not so important part of the heatspreader
