What is V-Ram ?

Go to solution Solved by SeanBond,

I know what V-Ram is but i don't know for what it is do i have a performance benefit when my card has more v ram i only have one 1080x1920 monitor ? :)

You don't get performance boosts from having more vram than a game or application uses. You can get gains from faster Vram but something everyone seems to flock to is high vram gpu's. Most games use between 1-1.5 Gigs of vram, the high end games use somewhere closer to 2 like battlefield 4. Don't be fooled by gpu's with more than 3gb's of vram because unless you are running 4k you don't need it.

Vram is the space for buffered video that is ready to move to your monitor.  If you are only using a 1920x1080 monitor anything 2GB and above is plenty.

For people that game at a much higher resolution or use mulitple monitors that is where the extra vram becomes really important.

VRAM stores textures and helps with large resolutions. The more VRAM you have, the larger the textures you can use and the higher the resolutions you can use before starting to use your system memory or HDD.

More VRAM doesn't increase the performance of your card but if you run out of VRAM, your games will chug and stutter. 2Gb of VRAM is a good amount these days.

Not really. Some games like Watch Dogs will require minimum of 3GB of VRAM to run at 4K but really that was an artificial limit that was cracked immediately. The only way you would use up all your VRAM is if you are into modding your game with really high resolution texture packs.

It's the kind of thing where the only times you see a performance benefit from having more is if you didn't have enough. If you have a 2GB card and you use a maximum of 0.7 GB, you won't see a performance gain over a 1GB card. It really depends on your usage. Resolution is important in determining this, but so are many other factors like what games you play, what texture settings you use, etc.

Yeah watch dogs was pretty broken in that aspect but I have never heard of an artificial limit they put in place. I would like to see a source if anyone has one.

not entirely true. Some heavily modded games like Skyrim will benefit from more than 3GB. As far as current vanilla games go though, you are correct.

Yeah ridiculously modded games but if you have it modded up to that point, you are not going to be running the game too well anyway.
