would you still suggest ATH-M40X because the m50's are a little bit out of my budget

If an open back pair of headphones is a HUGE issue for you, the M40x aren't a bad pair of closed headphones. But Honestly the HD558/518s are both better.

Yes but I prefer the m50. If you can 558 is the best option of the lot.

no.

The HD518 are my recommendation even though they are only 100CAD.

They are better but the m50 or m40 will work for him as well

I don't like the M50s or M40s very much. the X series improved upons numerous things, mainly the cushioning though. (also detachable cable)

I have a pair of 558's and love them.  Just be aware that they are open and therefore will leak sound.

Shure 440 with 840 pads is usually the way to go in Canada if you wanted to buy new because for some reason those don't have much of a markup if any at all when compared to the US.

They're also on massdrop with international shipping atm!  :D. These aren't bad headphones either, my good friend owns these and they compete with the M50s from when I last used them. I haven't tested comfort with the 840 pads though.

The 840 pads are nice but I think the 940 pads are so much better. I usually don't recommend it because it's not that popular but the 940 is just so damn comfy.

940 pads with the 440s or the 940s are comfortable? you're a bit unclear. I found that the 940s weren't that comfortable because of the weight and headband.

The 940 pads. I've near tried the actual 940 headphone.
