Hi guys

I was just wondering what would be the reason for my computer always restarting when it is on idle. This is annoying because when I am rendering on handbrake/premiere and I walk away I come back 1 hour later and my computer has restarted. I have tested that it is not on a timer because I setup a macro last night so that my mouse would constantly click and it did not restart.

Thanks

Sounds like a windows power saver setting.

Type "power" into start and go to "Power Options" make sure you haven't got it set to automatically go to sleep after 1 hour. Windows ignores what programs are running, and will only pay attention to input operations.

Alternatively, It could be BSOD'ing due to overstressing of the CPU/GPU

It could be a couple things (relative to my own experience): 1  you need to update the BIOS, or 2   the inside of your computer needs cleaning

Let's start with a few questions

1: What is the brand and model is your pre-built computer? (if not pre-built, move on to #2)

2: What is the brand and model of the motherboard? (may or may not apply if the computer in question is a laptop)

3: When was the last time you cleaned your computer, if at all?

4: What are you using to cool the CPU? (e.g. the stock cooler that came with the computer/CPU or insert 3rd party cooler here)

Why would it have anything to do with cleaning / temperature?

It does not restart if the pc is doing something. Thats like the opposite of overheating :P

 Intel Core i7 4790K || G.Skill 16GB DDR3 || MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G || Fractal Design Define R5 || Asus Gryphon Z97 || EVGA SuperNOVA 750G2 || Crucial MX100 256GB || Noctua NH-D15

It doesn't hurt to look into other possibilities. ;)

I've been doing some research/thinking.

Those are some high temps! How high are you overclocking? For this, I recommend either reducing your overclock or redoing the thermal paste, but if you don't want to do either of those, that's okay.

I clean my computer using this: http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW/

There is a 220 volt variant available here: http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Datavac-Elctrcduster-500W-European/dp/B003BZCOKK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_misc_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0W6TMNGH1SMA0DD9A7CG (I couldn't find a link to an Australian website, and I don't know how conversion would work if you actually decided to buy it from an American link, etc)

Yes, it is very expensive, but it pays itself off over time, especially since it can be used to clean more than just computers. :)

If these options aren't need or don't work, there are also the suggestions that @Tschloken put forward.

Last Minute Edit: What antivirus software do you use, and when was the last scan you did? <-- Just keeping our options open.

I don't know what the climate is like in Australia, but where I live, dust builds up pretty quickly over a short period of time, so I clean my PC out every month or 2. If enough dust builds up, higher temps are the usual result.

The only thing is it does not restart when it is not idling and it restarts when idling whether nothing is happening or CPU is at 100%, it does not matter. The OC is 4.2Ghz btw and those temps are fine for me.
