New SSD or Keep Old One

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

The random/search speed on your ssd is low: less than 10,000 iops.

Go for the Samsung 840 and perhaps use your current ssd as cache. It'll be a big improvement.

Hi all!

Just wondering if I should keep my OS drive which is a Gskill 60GB SSD (as featured here http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/gskill_phoenix_pro_60gb_ssd_review)

or

Buy a new Samsung SSD (the 120GB in particular as it's incredibly cheap ($100 on ebay) and has better write speeds. (as featured here http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_902_909&products_id=22033)

or go the Pro http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_902_909&products_id=22102

Thanks very much for the help in advance!

How do I set it to 'cache' and what does this mean?

I believe you go into the bios and use Intel's Smart Response Technology to set it up.

It basically caches (stores) what ever you use the most from an hdd to the ssd so that it can be accessed more quickly. It does this automatically once you set it up.

It's funny you should ask that, here's a video by somebody you might recognize: https://youtu.be/FI0JmKp1v4U

As for setting it to a 'cache' drive you would need an motherboard with Intel's Z68/Z77/H77/Q77 chipset, they provide an excellent setup guide here: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-032826.htm

I'm unsure about caching solutions for AMD chipsets.

I'm pretty certain that AMD themselves have no hardware/chipset level caching solutions and that you would need to install third-party software like Fancy Cache to enable caching.

Well I guess you could save the ssd for some future HTPC build or give it to a friend. :P
