Based on my research, Netgear seams to have some serious QA issues these days. But then again, they might be simply more popular and therefor more reports of routers that fails within a few months.

Linksys has great low end routers, but those wont' fit your need, and as for high-end, the only choice to consider is the WRT-1900AC. This one might be out of your budget.

ASUS has a few interesting models. You have the RT-N66U, which should be in your price range. Works great, this is what I have, great wireless N reception, simultaneous 2.5Ghz and 5GHz connection support. However, you need to use the stand to hold the router upright, else it may overheat, and start disconnecting devices (probably the processor throttles in some fashion, and can't hold the load.. but that is just my guess). The downside, is that the wires will stick out from the top. It's not the end of the world, but it is something to consider. There is a upper end model which might be above your price, it has a larger heatsink, you turn off the light indicators, and despite the router is on the upright by design for that one, the ports are position to be on the back, so you don't see them. My only real complaint I have so far with it, is that when you restart the router, or apply some settings which requires the router to restart, you have a page that pop-ups in your web browser that says you don't have internet access. A false message. It works fine. It's the only time it shows. And yes, this is with the latest firmware. I don't know if it's fixed on high-end model, or the AC model of mine (RT-AC66U). The router does support DD-WRT firmware, so there is that as well.

The RT-AC66U is an interesting choice. AC performance is exceptional, but Wireless N is like a entry, but good, wireless router. That is based on benchmarks from reviews.

So, if you have wireless AC devices, this router will get you performance matching the range of the really expensive models. But Wireless N, not really good, same for range. That is why I got the RT-N66U, as it fitted my budget and needs best (I have 0 wireless AC device, nor plan to buy any, anytime soon)

If you want both, then Linksys WRT-1900AC is what to get.

Note: The ASUS RT-N66U is running on an apparent, but my walls are in cement with metal mesh (the old ways to do walls in buildings, before drywall was used). My old router, Linksys WTR-160N had trouble getting to the next room. Just for reference. If I opened doors, it was better, a bit. Moving the router to my father place for testing, where he normal walls with drywall, and the place is bigger, the linksys WRT-160N had no problem. So my walls are a challenge.

The WiiU gamepad faces similar issue, Despite an apartment, going from the living room to a room, the gamepad had iffy wireless connection.
