My orginal card is no longer for sale .. and well they have the same looking one thats a r9 290x can you crossfire them both.. ? also I get the feeling I need to upgrade my PSU also for this any recommendations?

You'd need an 850W branded PSU to crossfire.

 

And yes you should be able to crossfire 2 different brands, as long as they're the same model you should have no problem.

I think cross firing a 290 with 290x will cause the "x" version to down clock to 290 speed

Performance is still pretty good though, check the spreadsheet I started for LTT 3DMark:
