I bought a 5930k in Hong Kong (saved £50) and am thinking about keeping it on my in my hand carry when I travel back to UK. Is the plastic case enough protection or should I keep the box on me as well? I'm trying to save some space in my hand carry.

should be fine.. id wrap it in tape and paper tho

It should be fine when you keep it in the plastic package, and as advised above, tape it in, you really don't want that cpu escaping and being all over the place. But if you are a bit careful you should be fine, don't forget it already traveled probably a long way and the package is designed for that :) .

I have traveled with a CPU and video card on my hand item and it was fine.

As long as you keep an eye on your bag you'll be fine.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k | CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 | Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 MARK 1 | Memory: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB 1866MHz | GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB Windforce

I'd keep it in the box just to be safe if I were you, but if you don't have room it should be fine in just it's plastic case. Just surround it with clothes or something really soft and non-conductive.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.
