Hi i have a strange issue where my cpu after a months time, seems to start to "underclock" itself when the pc asks for more power? I know it sounds weird, but i get really bad performance in some games, and benchmarking scores drop drastically. The Gpu usage is at about 10-40% usage in all the games, and fps at about 20-24 fps.

Some games that run slower are: Hitman Absolution, Minecraft, Watch dogs and Kerbal space program. For some strange reason Tomb raider seems to benefit from it, and i get about 3-8 fps better performance?

As i mentioned above it happens after about a months time, it can be fixed by reinstalling windows on the machine, but doing that each month is a real pain (have done it 2 times now) and now its the third time the cpu does this! Every time about a moth after the factory reset.

The only place i have found that tells me the cpu "underclocks" is in 3D Mark benchmarks scores.

When the test is done it brings up this score menu and when i scroll down over the information it should say:

Processor Intel Core i7-4820K

Reported stock core clock 3 700 MHz

Maximum turbo core clock 3 700 MHz <----

Physical / logical processors 1 / 8 # of cores 4

Package LGA2011

Manufacturing process 22 nm

TDP 130 W

But it now shows:

Processor Intel Core i7-4820K

Reported stock core clock 3 700 MHz

Maximum turbo core clock 1 200 MHz  <----

Physical / logical processors 1 / 8 # of cores 4

Package LGA2011

Manufacturing process 22 nm

TDP 130 W

For some reason the Turbo core clock decreases a lot, which could explain the fps drops in games that are cpu intensive i guess.

Now finally the question is if there is any fix to this. Any test i can run or setings i can change to fix it for good?!

Any help or ideas are apreciated! ;)

what? The Boost clock shouldnt drop randomly to 1.2 ghz after a month using it?! are you telling me that i need to overclock it to get it back up again?

its a bad turbosetting. load a brand new OC onto it and i bet that will fix it

'Load a brand new OC' Dude, it shouldn't be clocked that low, even at stock. You don't OVERCLOCK your CPU when you get your PC.

uum so you buy a K cpu to not overclock ? have i missed something the past few months

What version of Windows OS are you using? I haven't used nor really got into 8. But in 7 try changing your power options to high performance and see if that will increase it's performance. Some systems usually have it set to balance or power saver and if it's not configured correctly your processor could underclock. But since it underclock's during game it could entirely be something else. But, it's worth a try. Or maybe it's a Bios setting. Try changing presets in your Bios if your Bios has those options.

I am going to overclock it once it works properly ._.  But it shouldnt just drop like that, I think when its asking for more power under heavy load, it gets less, for some strange reason....

as i said. its probably something you've done since the "turbo" lowers the actual core clock. try to oc it with only a few mhz it would answer your question rather fast

I have windows 8.1, but i have already checked the power setings, i will take a look again just to be sure though. I have been multiple times in the bios, and done some changes but the problem still is there...

Well, I don't know what to tell you. But do this if you have no other options. Update your bios to newest settings and see if it continues. Or try checking for Malware or Adware to be sure. If no other options I'd do what Norwegiantweaker said and try to overclock it a little to see if that will improve performance or something of the like.

I have a anti virus software, and i just did a full system search with no adware or viruses detected. I CAN update the bios to a newer version though thats a beta version...

Ok so i restarted my computer to overclock it but when it booted up i got a message that said, "overclock failed" and it put me in the bios, i looked over the setings ,and could not understand what had happened? Should i still try and overclock the cpu now?

Wouldn't try a beta version. I'm literally stumped on what to do. Try to overclock as best you can using guides similar to your set up and see if that changes anything. But other than that is your CPU properly cooled? Run Prime95 for a few hours or use HWMonitor while gaming to see how hot it gets. It might underclock to protect itself if it's putting out a high amount of heat. But other than that, I really don't know.

i can run a test, but im pretty sure its no a heat issue. I am using a cooler master nepton 240L and the cpu runs at 50-60*C at most i think.

I don't know what to tell you then. Sorry man, this the best I could do from here. Hopefully someone better than me comes along and can offer a solution. Good luck.

Disabled speedstep in the bios and gone into Windows and had a look?

TBH - My 4690 is set to stay at its highest clock 3.9Ghz, even on idle. with 0-1% usage on idle, It's not pulling much power at all, very very similar wattage to having speedstep on @ idle.

I'd set speedstep off and see if it still has issues.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
