CAS latency. The lower it is, the better.

You can generally not get it under 9, but if you look around you might even be able to get RAM with a CAS latency of 7. Although that will often mean that you will have to "accept" lower frequencies.

That refers to the latency, in simple terms the lower the better.

Any idea what gigabytes and frequency should I get

I suggest you go with at least two DIMMs (for dual channel operation)

For capacity I'd say 8GB as a minimum (2 sticks of 4GB) however for video editing and rendering you might want more, I would typically recommend 16GB (2 sticks of 8GB) you can always add more later on if you like.

For frequencies, anything above 1600Mhz is good, get the highest you can I guess, I think 1600-2133mhz is the sweet spot for DDR3 without spending a load amount of money. I personally run 1866Mhz CL9 in my rig although I mainly use it for gaming and I don't do a lot of video editing, oh and bare in mind you can always overclock your memory too.

It depends on your use case, for gaming it's fine, however if you are more concerned about video editing, rendering effects, etc.. you will likely benefit from having more RAM.

An SSD is an excellent choice, doesn't help games much beside loading times, but does help to make your system feel faster and more responsive, an SSD will really help with stuff like file transfers and those times when you are dealing with large video files.

The Kit you first linked to is a 16GB (8GB X 2) Kit.

It runs with the following specifications

Timings (latencies): 7-8-8-24-2N

Voltage: 1.50V

The TridentX line-up is also G.Skill's "Overclocking Premium" of products.

The Blue RipJawsX kit is 16GB, but it is over 4 RAM sticks (4GB X 4) versus (8GB X 2).

They run at slightly higher latencies: 9-9-9-24-2N

Operating voltage is 1.35V

The RipJawsX line is the more "mainstream overclocking" products.

The Black G.Skill Sniper kit is also 16GB, but again, over the span of 4 RAM sticks (4GB X 4).

The specifications are the same as the RipJawsX line-up.

The Sniper products are considered as their "gaming" line of products.

If you have choices, I'd go with the following:

  • 16GB kit of (8GB X 2)
  • DDR3 1600MHz / DDR3 1866MHz / DDR3 2133MHz
  • 9-9-9-24-2N latency or lower (i.e. Cas 8 / 7...as mentioned in the above posts)
  • 1.50V or lower (some kits are 1.55V, 1.60V , 1.65V, or 1.65V+)
  • Pick a kit with a colour that you like...orange, blue, red, black, etc
  • Typically, you save it bit of money by getting a RipJaws, RipJawsX, RipJawsZ, Performance, Sniper, Ares kit versus a TridnetX kit.

RAM is RAM. Unless you want to overclock your RAM to break world records, there is no need to pay extra $$ for ones with BIG heatsinks and very high frequencies.

I'm using RipJaws and RipJawsX (it was on sale) RAM in my systems.

That should be fine. It's recommended to use a 8GB X 2 kit because they are verified AT THE FACTORY that they will work together without problems.

If you buy separately, you are not 100% guaranteed....but I haven't heard of any issues. Just be sure to buy the same model with same timings and you should good.

It get one stick that runs at 1866MHz 9-8-9-24 and a separate one that is 2133MHz 9-10-9-28, they will BOTHrun at the slowest settings ---> 1866MHz 9-10-9-28 (not 100% both can run at 9-8-9-24).
