CPU cooler compitability

Go to solution Solved by Rheinwasser,

Gigabyte Z97X-SLI

the NH-D15 will fit in your setup.

I need to replace my stock cooler on my 4790k since I'm going to start overclocking (and massive heatsinks are just dead sexy anyway).

The issue is I'm not sure whether to get a single- or dual-tower heatsink, and I'm not sure which will fit.

I'm considering the Hyper 212 EVO, and the Noctua NH-D14, NH-D15, NH-U12S, NH-U14S.

Firstly, is a dual-tower necessary for overclocking? (I don't wanna go above 4.6, tops.)

If not, is it fine to get the 212 EVO and use 2x Noctua fans? Or do I need to go for the NH-U12S/NH-U14S?

Secondly, will it fit in a Corsair 450D with 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws X? (Corsair's site says 165mm maximum, and the NH-D15, NH-U14S are exactly that height. It won't be tapping against the window or anything will it?)

I know that's a lot of questions, thanks for your help though!

which mainboard do you use?

it won't be tapping the window. corsair puts in a little bit of headroom, i am sure.

personally i'd get the U14S.

Don't look at it from single or dual towers, look at the actual cooling performance from the cooler.

Fair point, my friend.

Because blehhh.

I just like the air cooling aesthetic and old-timey-ness of it better.

But I am fully aware that that's not a good reason :P

That is awesome to know, thank you! I guess I have to decide between the NH-D15 and the U14S now

In terms of air cooling aesthetics, I personally think the D15's bulk looks really aggressive and quite good.

Since it will fit in your case, why not go for the best performing one? The price difference between the two is very small so I don't really see a reason not to go with the D15 unless you prefer the slimmer look of the U14S.

The D15 performs better, but I'm not sure if your ram is compatible, However the u14s is quieter and also performs very well.

If you want as much performance as possible get the D15 just make sure you find out about the RAM height.

the d15 is much better and also not much more expensive.

disadvantage: you won't see your motherboard anymore.

if you are ok with that, get the d15, otherwise get the u14s.
