Adding another R9 290

Hi,

 

I've currently got a 290X in my system, and am thinking of getting another 290 for my system to get ready for an upgrade to 1440p or 4k within the next year.

 

I've recently found a HIS IceQ X2 R9 290 on Gumtree.co.uk near me for £190, it is a review sample card which has only been used for a review and a couple of benchmarks, which of course means there is no warranty on the card.

 

The guy has asked if I would to come view the card and see it working.

I'm not sure if you can crossfire a 290 with a 290X.

If you add an R9 290 to your R9 290X, keep in mind that both of your cards will run at R9 290 SPECS (2560 stream processors) so you would be better going with another R9 290X

You likely can, AMD has more leinent CrossFire rules than NVIDIA. For example, you can CrossFire a 7970 with an R9 280 and a 7990. Or, a 7970, 7950, R9 280X and R9 280. Maybe an R9 295X2, R9 290X and R9 290?

yes you can but both cards will run at the lower GPU specs.

I can't imagine i'd lose that much performance from the 290X's extra cores?

It wouldn't be anything extreme in terms of performance differences.

 

Your setup will perform like an R9 290 CrossFire, as opposed to two R9 290Xes performing as they would. If you want to see the possible performance gap, I would suggest looking at some benchmarks.

You will need it for 4K,

but 1440p I think you can manage with one card.
