Hi all!

So i recently made a post here, asking for recommendations as to which CPU and GPU (and motherboad+ PSU i should get). I've just ordered it all, and i'm pretty sure i'll have to re-install my PC. I'm upgrading from an AMD Phenom II x6 1045t to an Intel Core i5 4690k, and from a Gigabyte MA770T to a MSI Z87-G45 motherboard. Just to confirm, i do need to reinstall windows for this, right? I'm still gonna be using the same SSD.

Now to my questions: First of all, I'm running Windows 8.1, would it be possible for me to use the built-in re-install feature? How'd i go about that, and would the "refresh" feature be enough? If that's not an option, how would i go about re-installing? I don't have a DVD with Windows on it, and my purchased version is only an upgrade version (though i seem to remember something about a work around).

Secondly: my programs. I'm currently running an SSD with a 2TB hard drive, for storage and programs that don't need the extra speed. I will have to re-install every program on that disk, won't i? Do you have any tips to make that easier?

If you need more info on anything, please let me know!

Thank you in advance!

1. A clean re-install is always the best IMO, if you can get a disk, or even better, a USB to put the new installer on I suggest going for that. You should be able to re-install the OS with the old key you have active now, as long as you have it written somewhere. NOTE: an OEM code will be a bit more difficult to deal with. Also you will most likely have to do the phone verification for that key to work if you do a pure re-install.

2. I suggest making a list of all the programs that you have/want, have it ordered so that all you need to do is follow that list. Also decide if you need the programs on an SSD or HDD. Some games may go on the SSD depending on it's size. Start-up programs should always go to the SSD. (drivers and stuff like that)

I do not know about WIN8's re-install feature, I have never used WIN8. All I know is that a fresh install on a clean SSD is optimal. The re-install feature should be good enough if you just want stuff to work, and may be the only way to keep your current activation key. This only thing that I can say for sure is that it is never a bad idea to make a list.

EDIT1: Considering how you are going from AMD to Intel a re-install is certainly needed as far as I know. I am not 100% sure about win8. I would look at what others have to say on this. I didn't even know that WIN8.1 had a built in re-install feature, if you can you may want to do that.

I am interested in seeing what others wave to say as I dont know a whole lot about win8.1.

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

Okay, I'll start making a list, and also see what others have to say. Thank you for the response!
